Pride Month Song of the Day - Heaven - Troye Sivan, feat. Betty Who

Without losing a piece of me
How do I get to heaven?
Without changing a part of me
How do I get to heaven?
Troye Sivan's 4th single from his debut Blue Neighborhood album is this underrated gem that speaks to an inner struggle that a lot of us deal with in our lives. Just listen to the lyrics of Heaven...
All my time is wasted
Feeling like my heart's mistaken, oh
So if I'm losing a piece of me
Maybe I don't want heaven?

Song of the Day - The Good Side - Troye Sivan

I caught the movie Boy Erased last night and all I can say is that it's really hard to believe that this kind of stuff actually happens. Pretty powerful stuff! Anyhow, one of the songs featured in the film is this tender little melody by Troye Sivan, who makes his acting debut in the film. Check out The Good Side...

Song of the Day - 1999 - Charli XCX, Troye Sivan
A few weeks ago my friend Sonny sent me a text suggesting these two songs that both had to do about going back to the 90's, a wonderful decade for sure! As I do often, I didn't have time to answer the text at the moment, and I never got around to answering it or even remembering it until now. The first song was Ladies in the 90's, by Lauren Alaina, which I admit I haven't checked out more than once or twice, and the other is this catchy little ditty by Charli XCX, featuring guest vocals by Troye Sivan. Love! Here's 1999...

New Music Fridays, August 31st, 2018 - Troye Sivan's Bloom and More

The biggest news in new music this week is the release of Troye Sivan's highly anticipated sophomore album, Bloom. I first discovered Sivan like many others, with the fantastic Wild, from his debut Blue Neighborhood. Though I may do a review of the record, time permitting, Billboard has a great take on it right here. I've listened to it a couple of times already and LOVE! In the meantime, here are four new tunes to whet your appetites this week...
Now here's a bass-y, bouncy, groove-alicious nugget from Haitian producer Michael Brun, featuring the hypnotic vocals of Nigerian singer Kah-Lo. Check out Spice...
Deep Down - Zhavia Ward
Sadly, I've never heard of Zhavia Ward before, but with this soulful, rich jam I'm hearing shades of Lauryn Hill, a lil bit of Amy Winehouse and everything in between. Love! Check out Deep Down...

Kesha joins British band The Struts for a reworking of their song Body Talks and the result is some good old fashioned rock n roll. Check it out...

New Music Fridays, June 15th, 2018 - Plenty of Great Stuff!
I knew within the first half-hour or so during my discovery of New Music Fridays on Spotify that this was going to be a special week. There are so many great tunes in this week's crop of new music that I could have highlighted twenty of them. Alas, most of the ones I really liked are indeed found within, either in music form or as an honorable mention. Man this week's going to give me long periods of music pleasure! Check it out...
One of the most exciting new tunes of the week comes in the form of a brand new collaboration by two of today's hottest stars, Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande. With pulsating rhythms and soft, sensual vocals, this one's already on fire. Check out Dance to This...
Bed - Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande appears as a vocalist on not one, but two new tunes by other artists this week, and both tunes are kind of on the softer side of things. This one, from Minaj's upcoming Queen, is steamy and from the looks of it, the video is gonna be too. Check out Bed...
Growing Pains - Alessia Cara
This new song by talented young Alessia Cara is our first new taste of what's to come from the singer's sophomore album, and by the sounds of it, it's going to be good. Check out Growing Pains...
I'm a Mess - Bebe Rexha
Brooklyn born singer Bebe Rexha has got a new tune out and it's drawing comparisons to Meredith Brooks' I'm a Bitch. Check out the similarities between the songs on Billboard, and in the meantime check out I'm a Mess...
Let Me Live - Rudimental, Anne-Marie, Major Lazer, Mr. Eazi
This star-studded collaboration by Rudimental and Major Lazer has got a sweet, reggae-tinged sound and with Anne-Marie's vocals, this one's outta the park. Check out Let Me Live...
Maria - Christina Aguilera
By far the best song I've heard so far from Christina's new record is this soulful piece of joy. Check out the beautiful Maria...
Just My Type - The Vamps
It's really a shame that Brit band The Vamps don't get more attention here in the States. They've got a pop sensibility that's really always spot on, with songs that are always catchy, always fun, including this new track. Check out a live performance of Just My Type...
Blurry Eyes - Hotel Garuda, RUNN
Here's yet another song I couldn't resist spotlighting here. You know I love dance music and this one is funky! Check out Blurry Eyes...

New Music Fridays, May 3rd, 2018 - New Stuff From X-Tina, Shawn Mendes, Troye Sivan and More
Where last week's New Music Fridays was jam packed with great new stuff from relatively new artists, we find new gems from tried and true artists this week, including the return of Christina Aguilera, some youthful infusion from Shawn Mendes, Khalid and Troye Sivan, and much much more. Check it out...
Shawn Mendes has an eponymous album, his third, coming out later this month and the songs he's been putting out thus far have shown a natural progression towards pop music perfection. Such is the case with his newest, a collaboration with fellow crooner Khalid. The song features dueling vocals blended perfectly together in what just may become one of the hottest hits of the year. Check out Youth...
The Way I Am - Charlie Puth
Charlie Puth keeps his string of hot releases going with this pleasingly upbeat, yet introspective tune. Check out The Way I Am...
I'll Be There - Jess Glynne
I am loving Jess Glynne. Who would have thought that she'd come back from her guest vocal on Clean Bandit's monumental Rather Be right to her own solo debut and the great success of Hold My Hand? Well, with a spot on Rudimental's These Days, the British singer has surely established herself as a force in the music world. Now Glynne is back with yet another inspirational gem that's sure to be on my playlist for some time to come. Check out I'll Be There...
Accelerate - Christina Aguilera, with Ty Dolla $ign, 2 Chainz
One of the most talked-about songs of the week is Christina Aguilera's first new song in five years. Earlier in the week, Ms. X-Tina announced the release of her sixth studio album, Liberation, coming out in June, and the buzz among her fans, including me, is well, we're excited. The new song features rappers Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz and is a quick-moving, rap-infused song that I'm thinking I need to listen to more to get into. By the way, the tune is also reportedly produced by Kanye West, in case you might be wondering. Check out Variety for more on the album and check out Accelerate right here...
Bloom - Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan adds to three the number of pre-released songs ahead of his next studio album. Whereas the somber reflection of The Good Side hearkens to reflections from a past life, Bloom continues where My My My left off, finding Sivan in a blissful place in his life, singing about life and love and well, just being happy. Check out the cool lyric video for Bloom here...
Well I could seriously go on and on and on. Lots of honorable mentions here, even the return of Guns n Roses, which I actually thought about highlighting. Check out some more really good stuff...

Song of the Day - The Good Side - Troye Sivan
The second single from Troye Sivan's upcoming sophomore album is an acoustic and melancholy song that serves as an open letter to an ex-boyfriend who was on the rougher side of things during their relationship. The tune shows off Sivan's rich voice and is pretty catchy for a ballad. Here he is performing The Good Side on SNL...

New Music Fridays, January 19th, 2018 - New Kylie, Chainsmokers and More
Oh man, there were a lot of new songs released this past week! I spent no less than two hours combing through all the new music tracks on Spotify's New Music Fridays. Surprisingly, there weren't too many tunes I bookmarked, but the ones I did will be on my playlist for a long time, I am sure. Exciting new stuff here, folks especially the debut of Kylie Monogue's Dancing and new stuff by Troye Sivan and The Chainsmokers, among others. So let's get right to it...
Dancing - Kylie Minogue
After what seemed like an eternity, Aussie superstar Kylie Minogue is back with a brand new song from a forthcoming album called Golden. The song is not as immediately memorable as the debut to her last album, Kiss Me Once's Into the Blue, but the mid-tempo tune is Kylie through and through nonetheless. Check out Dancing...
Sick Boy - The Chainsmokers
After what seemed like a long hiatus from music, The Chainsmokers are back with a darker, more serious sound. Sick Boy is eliciting some unfavorable reviews from critics, and I can understand why, but to a point. No, this new track isn't fun at all, and its dramatic undertones might disappoint some fans, but to me it just might attract them some new ones. I'll let you decide...
The Good Side - Troye Sivan
A week after releasing My My My! in advance of his new album, Troye Sivan put out a new track, The Good Side. This one's more like the stuff on his Blue Neighborhood album, and possibly an apologetic nod to a former lover mentioned on that album. The ballad is straightforward and honest, and a perfect second release for Sivan. Check him out performing the song on SNL this week...
These Days - Rudimental, Macklemore, Jess Glynne, Dan Caplen
British band Rudimental has released a new, beautiful and inspiring track. These Days features fellow Brits Jess Glynne and Dan Caplen and Seattle-based rapper Macklemore. Check out this beautiful song...
Heaven's Gate - Burna Boy, Lily Allen
Nigerian rapper Burna Boy is just beginning to become internationally known. After appearing on Fall Out Boy's Sunshine Riptide, the performer has just released his own single. Heaven's Gate features Lily Allen on vocals, and her unique voice blends well with this up tempo, island rap jam. Check out the very cool Heaven's Gate...
With the unusually high number of new music releases this week, of course there's got to be some honorable mentions. Check out these noteworthy new tunes...
Supplies - Justin Timberlake
Ignore Me - Betty Who
No Drama - Tinashe, Offset
Placebo - Devin Dawson
Human - Kimbra

Hump Day Song of the Day - My My My! - Troye Sivan

The very first song highlighted this week on New Music Fridays was this new, sexually charged dance tune from Aussie singer Troye Sivan. The song is from his upcoming sophomore album and I am certainly looking forward to more. Check out My My My!

New Music Fridays, January 12th, 2018 - Five Hot New Tracks
In all the months I've been writing this column, I don't think I've ever bookmarked less songs than I did this past Friday. That's not to say that I couldn't find five nice new music tracks to get excited about. Check out this week's offerings...
My My My! - Troye Sivan
Aussie Troye Sivan has been working on the follow-up to his stellar debut Blue Neighborhood, and he has just released the first track and video from it. The song is called My My My! and it's much closer to the dancey sound of his recent appearance on Martin Garrix's There For You than any of the tunes on the first album. The new sound is nice, but I am hoping he'll stick to at least some of what made him so great in the first place, namely songs that showcase his deep, rich voice. Check out the sexually charged video for My My My!
Spotlight - Marshmello, Lil Peep
Superstar deejay/producer Marshmello has come out with one of the most talked about new EDM tunes this week. The steady, hypnotic track features the late Lil Peep, who passed away from a drug overdose just this past November. According to Billboard, the artist was hesitant to put out the song, which he worked on with the rapper just a few weeks before his death, but Peep's mother convinced him to do so and the results are well, check it out...
The Champion - Carrie Underwood, Ludacris
One of the week's most pleasant surprises comes from an unlikely source. On Friday, country music star and former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood unveiled a new song especially created for Super Bowl LII, which takes place on Sunday, February 4th. The song is oh so catchy and features a surprisingly nice guest vocal from rapper Ludacris. One of my favorite tunes of the week. Check out The Champion...
Curious - Hayley Kiyoko
Singer/songwriter/actress Hayley Kiyoko just dropped a song from her upcoming album, Expectations, and it's is catchy and very pop-oriented. In fact, I loved it on the very first listen, which says a lot. I can definitely see this one becoming a hit. Check out Curious...
Alright - Mike Yung
New York City subway soul singer and America's Got Talent semifinalist has put out a classic soul song that I wish I could find somewhere on the Internet. This track is the ultimate in soulful inspiration and goes right up there immediately with classics from Sam Cooke, The Righteous Brothers and more. If you love inspirational music, then go out and find this one!
Stay tuned for more New Music Fridays next week!

Best of 2017 Song of the Day - There For You - Martin Garrix, Troye Sivan

Now that my Top 50 Pop Songs of 2017 is out there, I'm going to turn my attention to the best dance music of the past year. Here's a favorite of mine from superstar deejay/producer Martin Garrix, with Aussie Troye Sivan, who is reportedly working on a new record (can't wait!). Check out the smooth, dancey There For You...

Song of the Day - There For You - Martin Garrix, feat. Troye Sivan

A couple of weeks ago, this dance song from Dutch deejay/producer Martin Garrix and featuring Aussie was released and it is good! The duo debuted the tune back in April at Coachella and was well received by the crowd. Sivan's rich voice lends itself well to dance, no? Check it out for yourself right here...

Song of the Day - Heaven - Troye Sivan, with Betty Who
The truth runs wild
Like a tear down a cheek
Trying to save face and daddy heartbreak
I'm lying through my teeth

This voice inside
Has been eating at me
Trying to replace the love that I fake
With what we both need
Without losing a piece of me
How do I get to Heaven?
Without changing a part of me
How do I get to Heaven?
All my time is wasted
Feeling like my heart's mistaken, oh
So if I'm losing a piece of me
Maybe I don't want Heaven
Young Aussie crooner Troye Sivan has just released a new video for the song Heaven and just like the tune, the video tackles some pretty heavy stuff. The black and white vid is interspersed with scenes of Sivan embracing a faceless man and scenes from the struggle that LGBT's have been dealing with for years. The release couldn't have come at a better time, as we here in America are faced with potential new struggles as a new leadership with a track record of anti-LGBT sentiments begins to unfold. Check out the powerful Heaven...
