Song of the Day - Symphony - Clean Bandit, featuring Zara Larrson

Image result for symphony clean bandit

Though the musical landscape has been quite dismal for quite some time now, there are a few gems hidden amongst the rest.  Clean Bandit is an act that had a monster hit a couple of years back with the stellar Rather Be, but just recently they struck a whole new chord with their up tempo Rockabye. Now the British band has teamed up with up and coming Swedish singer Zara Larrson on this sweet sweet love song that is pleasing to the ears. Check out Symphony...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Chain Reaction - Diana Ross

Image result for chain reaction diana ross

We conclude our week long tribute to Diana Ross with a tune I was hoping she was going to sing the other night, but didn't.  Back in 1985, Diana released her last great album, Eaten Alive.  The majority of the tracks on the album were produced by legendary disco group, the Bee Gees, with the exception of the title track, which was penned by Michael Jackson.  Though this song was the only big hit to come off the record, many of the tracks here are amongst my favorite Diana songs ever.  So click play below to relive a fond memory and then go out and have an awesome Friday...

Song of the Day - Missing You - Diana Ross

Image result for missing you diana ross

The year was 1984, and on April 1st Motown legend Marvin Gaye had been murdered by his own father during an altercation at his home in California.  Lionel Richie soon penned a song for Diana to sing in honor of her friend with whom she shared a long and storied friendship.  The song appeared on Ross' album Swept Away and was one of her many top ten hits, and a great one at that.  Check out the beautiful Missing You...

Song of the Day - Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand) - Diana Ross

Image result for reach out and touch somebody's hand

This piece from a 1979 Las Vegas show exemplifies just what I love, and what I've always loved, about Diana Ross.  I can't count how many times I've watched this show, and this scene is my absolute favorite.  When she closed the show with this, her signature song, the other night, this very portion of her Vegas show came into my head.  I know it's a little long, about 15 minutes, but I promise you it's worth it. I've been smiling for the past 15 minutes and you will too.  Check out Diana Ross performing Reach Out and Touch...

Song of the Day - Forever Came Today - The Supremes

Image result for forever came today

Though she didn't perform this particular song last night, Diana Ross did do a whole set of classic Supremes' tunes at her show in NYC.  I wasn't really surprised by it because it wasn't one of their biggest songs.  Still, I love the tune, and my pal Larry, who accompanied me to the concert last night, loves it!  In fact, he turned me on to this particular performance from the Ed Sullivan show circa 1968.

Back in the day, there was a lot of controversy surrounding Forever Came Today.  Followers of Diana might recall it as being one of her first solo songs.  Mary Wilson, in her memoir Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme, claims she never sang on the tune and it was recorded after Florence Ballard had been fired from the group.  Not a pretty moment in Diana's history, for sure!

Regardless, the tune is classic and the performance even more-so.  Check it out...

Song of the Day - Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross

Image result for ain't no mountain high enough diana ross

Before there was Beyoncé, there was Diana.  Diana Ross was and always will be my very first and very special diva.  I acquired my love of dance music from her, and she's been with me somehow all through my adult life, although she hasn't made anything new for quite some time.  Tonight, for the first time in I don't know how many years, I will be watching her perform in New York City.  I hadn't even known she was out there performing anymore, but when my friend Larry asked for someone to go with I was the first in line.  So I think what I'm gonna do here is celebrate Diana and her vast catalog of music throughout the rest of the week and we'll start with this, her very first solo single, the classic reworking of a classic.  Enjoy Ain't No Mountain High Enough...

Song of the Day - Selfish - HNDRXX, feat. Rihanna

Image result for selfish hndrxx

Here's a recent discovery that I made on Spotify, which I'm surprised hasn't made its way over to radio.  The tune is a debut single for rapper HNDRX with a little help from superstar Rihanna. The song is vintage RiRi, melancholic and rhythmic all at the same time, and I'm loving it.  Check out Selfish...

Oh man, The Chainsmokers are simply on fire these days.  With a new album and a seemingly endless presence on the charts over the past few months, these guys are surely one of the top musical acts today!  Here's their latest, along with supergroup Coldplay, on a tender yet dancey new jam...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - S.O.S. - ABBA

Some of my chaperone buddies and I are still in an ABBA state of mind after visiting their museum in Stockholm on Monday.  I know I've been singing them in my head all week and I just got a text that my pal Audrey's alarm went off this morning to Take a Chance On Me.  Here's one of my favorite ABBA songs, the sweet and uplifting S.O.S...

Song of the Day - Waterloo - ABBA

Image may contain: 2 people, night and indoor

I am back!  Well, after a great 12 days in Europe, we all returned late last night and it is straight back to business.  One of the funnest things i got to do over there was a visit to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm just this past Monday. Never in a million years did I think I would ever go there, and so while I was there I was in 7th Heaven.  More about that on John's World soon enough, but for now I think I'll be posting some of their tunes over the next week or so because I just can't get them out of my head, lol.  Here's the one that started it all for them, the song for which they won the Eurovision Song contest back in 1974. Check out Waterloo...

Well this is it!  I am headed out to Europe this evening, visiting London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen and Stockholm over the next twelve days, so you'll have to do without Songs of the Day for that time.  Can ya handle it?  Lol,  Anyway, Stockholm...I just knew I was going to save my favorite Swede for last and here's one of her best...

Song of the Day - Scheibe - Lady Gaga

I don't speak German, but I can if you like...

I never thought in a million years that I'd ever go to Germany, but in a week or so I will be in Hamburg.  There are a few 'German' songs I could have posted...99 Luftballoons, Der Komisar, etc., but I decided on this masterful piece of German gibberish from Lady Gaga's last great album.  Check out Scheibe...

Song of the Day - One Thing - One Direction

Image result for one direction one thing

London, England.  That's where I will be come Friday.  I can't wait!  Anyway, as for a song representing the good ole U.K., here's another short-lived boy band that was really hot just a couple of years ago.  I was listening to that same Current Faves playlist I've been talking about lately, and me n my pal Kyle couldn't help but sing along to this sugary pop tune.  Eh, what can I say?  It's fun!

Song of the Day - Let's Get French - Coco McQueen

I'm off to Europe this Thursday for 12 days with my school, and so you can expect some Euro-themed music for the next four days.  First up is a recent release that I found on Spotify...it's pure Euro pop/dance music, catchy and very, well, French.  Although I won't be visiting France this time round, it's still Europe, so check out Let's Get French...

Song of the Day - Next to Me - Emeli Sandé

This is my favorite picture I have of my father.  After he passed away back in 2009, we found this painting in the back of his clothes closet and I just thought it was such a beautiful painting of he and his mother, my grandmother.  His face never changed over the years and she, well she was such a beauty herself.  Today would have been my dad's 76th birthday, and so here's a song just for him...
