I've never been on the Coldplay bandwagon before, but I was in the car with my pal Rich last night and when this song came on he immediately reached over to rais the volume.  Ooh, I love this song! he said as he began singing along.  You do? I replied, surprised a little, for I've never known him to be a Coldplay fan either.  And so we listened...I actually liked it.  It's got elements of dance in it, so yeah! The song was released in January of this year and it has uncredited vocals by none other than Beyoncé (that part rang a little familiar to me).  So anyway, check out Hymn For the Weekend...

I have been wanting to post a tune from Beyoncé's Lemonade for a long, long time now.  I really love the record, and there have been a couple of times I tried to post a song, but was unable to for technical reasons.  Well, Ms/ Bey just released a cut from the film to the soft, yet funky Hold Up.  It's one of my favorites off the album and you do have to get through a little over a minute of talkover intro before you get to the tune, but it is worth it!

I have been dying to post something off of Beyoncé's Lemonade, but for whatever reason...HBO, popularity, whatever...everything from that album, which I love, is under web-based lock and key. This morning was the third such try at a tune from the record.   I wanted to post the electrically-charged Freedom with Kendrick Lamar, but was dead ended at every turn.  Sigh!  After all that, I wanted to post some Bey anyway, so here's one of my favorites from her last one. Song of the Day - Love On Top - Beyoncé

Basking in the afterglow of another Super Bowl performance, which happened to be a well-done, energetic performance of a brand new song, Formation, Beyoncé is getting ready to take on the music world by storm once again.  Though I've already heard very mixed reactions to the song, and the performance, to me...well, I loved them both.  The song is very R&B, with lots of funk thrown in for good measure, and the video is pretty darned entertaining, as well.  

The new song will apparently play as the lead-in to a new album and ensuing tour (announced on the singer's YouTube page, which you can check out right here.).  Though the vid is too new to be shared here, you can check it out on the singer's YouTube page.  In the meantime, here's a favorite from Bey's under-appreciated 4 album.  Check out the sunshiney Love On Top...

Song of the Day - I Was Here - Beyoncé

Today is my birthday and rather than post a birthday song by Madonna or Katy Perry like I usually do, I wanted to post a song that's near and dear to me.  I perused my catalog of favorite songs and after a few possibilities I came across this one and I knew immediately.  Beyoncé's I Was Here could have been written by me.  I think above all else in this life, I'd want people to think of me and remember me as someone who lived, someone who loved, and someone who made my mark on this world in my own way.

Oftentimes I feel like I don't belong here.  It feels like no one else thinks the way I do, believes what I believe, or acts the way I do, yet I still persevere in my commitment to leaving my footprint, making the most out of this crazy, precious thing we all call life in the only way I know how.  I've been reminded recently that life is such a delicate thing and we all need to appreciate all that we do have, each and every day, and most of all be thankful to have another one to live.  

I've wasted a lot of days in my life, and I'm probably going to waste a few more before I'm done, but I would hope that once I do reach my end I can look back and say, with pride, yes, I was here!  Happy Birthday to me! Mwah!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Upside Down - Diana Ross

The other night, after the Madonna concert, my friends and I got into a discussion about Diana Ross and Beyoncé.  Two of my buddies are younger, and aren't familiar with Diana, my very first, and probably the original, diva of the modern era.  There is no doubt that the two singers carry many similarities between them: both started their careers in very successful girl groups and both left said groups to go on to highly successful solo artists,  Both ladies were/are no doubt glamorous and both are divas.

That being said, of course Diana and Beyoncé come from entirely different eras, and so with progress that way it's been in music all around (charts, means of distribution, technology, etc.), it's kind of hard to make a true comparison, though it would be a good topic for a future post.  Having followed Diana for years, listening and dancing to her music, and seeing her perform several times, my personal opinion is that Lady Di has had the more successful career and to me is the true queen diva.  It is difficult to calculate, but from my quick research this morning, Diana's got so called Queen Bey beat by about 30 tunes (combined group and solo), give or take a couple.

Regardless, both ladies are legends of their own time, and I do enjoy the music of each.  Today is Flashback Friday, so I'm going to share the first Diana record I really got into.  Upside Down was the lead single off of Di's 1980 diana album and hit the top ten in no less than 15 countries around the world.  It came right towards the end of the disco era and the song singlehandedly influenced me to switch my musical tastes from rock music to dance music.  Oh, the memories...

Labor Day.  The unofficial last day of summer and the last day for John's World Summer Jams.  I hope you've all had a great summer and have enjoyed at least some of the great summer jams I've posted for the past couple of months.  This one final jam was played twice yesterday on a very busy dance floor at Cherry's yesterday.  It's one of my favorite Beyoncé tunes and this flash mob video is pretty fun to watch, too!  Enjoy and have a great Labor Day...

Oh it's been a long, long time for Lady Gaga to make an appearance on this blog.  This hiatus from the dance/pop music scene has been somewhat...um...unusual, and I've been missing her, especially the old Gaga that appears in this one.  Anyway, both the song and the video are extremely entertaining, and perfect for a summer dance party... Happy Thursday!

Madge's Star-Studded Video for "Bitch I'm Madonna"...Meh!

Have you seen Madonna's new video for Bitch I'm Madonna, yet?  Well the vid for the third single off Rebel Heart dropped with great fanfare earlier this week and reviews are decidedly mixed.  First of all, as I said earlier, this tune is not my favorite track off of the album, though I don't hate it either...  

This one's similar in scope to the MDNA track, I Don't Give a F***, which also featured Minaj, and is even more frenzied than their prior collaboration. Bitch I'm Madonna is a lighthearted and fun track, and it sounds like they all had a good time making it. It's not my favorite of the new tracks, but it does remain in the brain for awhile after a listen and it does have a great hook, too!

Much of the fanfare the video received was its star-studded guest cameos, including the likes of Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Chris Rock, Diplo, Rita Ora, Alexander Wang, sons Rocco and David, and of course guest vocalist on the song Nicki Minaj.  The scene is as frenzied as the song, a wild frenzied party in a high rise building, with bathing Asian beauties, scantily clad hunks, breakdancing and shot taking...and, and...ah well, check it out for yourself.  As for me, meh! It was fun watching it once...

Song of the Day - Partition - Beyoncé

It's a dreary, rainy day here in the Northeast and I think it's a good time to slow it down a bit.  This is my favorite tune off of Bey's latest eponymous album.  Partition is the ultimate sexy jam, heavy on bass, and soulful, down n dirty lyrics.  Perfect for a rainy day... oh, and I LOVE the French part!
