Ten Albums That Changed My Life - #2 - Madonna - Madonna

Madonna (Madonna album) - Wikipedia

Partially reposted from John'sWorld, August 2nd, 2003.

Everybody (Madonna song) - Wikipedia

After playing the heck out of Everybody back in 1982, I welcomed with open ears the then mysterious singer's second, double sided single, Physical Attraction and Burning Up (which was a much more danceable version than the one that was put on the album). My thirst was quenched for a little while longer. Then, the following summer, that album featuring the now iconic platinum blonde posing youngster with the piercing eyes came out and I was simply in heaven! The people in my family can attest that way back then I knew she was something special.

I remember it well.  Crazy Eddie's on Fordham Road in the Bronx.  I hurried up there in between classes at Fordham University, where I was a student at the time.  Even then, the anticipation for more music from this new, largely unknown artist was huge.  I walked into the store and there she was, plastered all over the wall behind the register.  One of her first iconic photos gave us a first glimpse of a person who would rule the world as no woman had ever done before.  My love affair had begun!

I'd mentioned in yesterday's post that I had become a lover of dancing by that time, and Madonna made me dance and sing...oh, I got up and did my thing for hours on end.  I loved every single second of this record, and by the time her second album debuted, it had to be pushed back because this one was so popular.  And the rest is history...and hugely my story too!  Here's a favorite track off the record, one that made me wish I had taken up professional dancing.  Here's Lucky Star...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Keep It Together - Madonna

Keep It Together (song) - Wikipedia

Good morning and Happy Friday!I've been contemplating sharing this one for awhile, because as the days go by in this quarantine, it's getting harder and harder to keep it together.  Many of you may not know this song from Queen M, but it was featured in the film Truth or Dare, as the number was the closer of the Blonde Ambition Tour, which is where this performance is from.  Enjoy....

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Like a Virgin - Madonna

Image result for like a virgin

Thirty five years ago this past Halloween, the very highly anticipated lead single from Madonna's sophomore album was released.  Thirty five years ago! Yikes!  Anyway, the song is as singable today as it was then.  Here's Like a Virgin...

Song of the Day - Frozen - Madonna

You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You're frozen, when your heart's not open

One of the highlights to Madonna's new Madame X show was a quite interesting visual to this classic song from Ray of Light.  Here's Frozen...

Song of the Day - God Control - Madonna

Image result for madame x cover

Okay, so officially excited.  I am going to see Madonna this evening at the BAM Opera House in Brooklyn.  I'd been believing that this would be the first tour I'd miss since 93's The Girlie Show because the prices for this one were exorbitant.  All I can say is a phone call from a pal and StubHub did the trick for me and now excitement!  Here's one of the tracks from Madame X, a neo-disco jam with a pretty powerful politically charged (and graphically violent---be warned) video.  Here's God Control...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Holiday - Madonna

If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice

It's Madonna's birthday today...let's celebrate!

Pride Month Song of the Day - Beautiful Stranger - Madonna

Image result for beautiful stranger

For pretty much as long as she's been around, Madonna has always been a champion of LGBT rights and this year, the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, she's been named the Stonewall Ambassador of Pride Month and will be performing next week at Pride Island, a special live music event that's held to commemorate the end of World Pride.  That said, here's a fun little shaggerific time with Madonna and Austin Powers.  Check out Beautiful Stranger...

Song of the Day - I Rise - Madonna

Image result for i rise madonna

Madame X is here!  Honestly this latest release by Madge has elicited the least excitement in me for some reason, though admittedly I did Madonna binge yesterday after listening to Madame a couple of times, which is a positive sign.  I'll save my opinions on the album for later, but in the meantime here's one of the singles from it, probably one of the most Madonnaesque tunes there.  Check out I Rise...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Living For Love - Madonna

Image result for living for love madonna

Today is a big day for Madonna fans as Madame X, the icon's 14th studio album of her career, comes out.  Because it's Flashback Friday, we're going to save a new track for tomorrow, but we've still got to celebrate somehow, and that's with Living For Love, the debut single off of her last record, 2015's Rebel Heart.  Check it out...

On Wednesday, this most iconic song of the most iconic performer celebrated 30 years since its release in 1989.  Still fantabulous!  Still classic!  Here's Madonna...

Song of the Day - Medellin - Madonna, Maluma

Image result for madonna medellin

Talk about good timing!  I am leaving for Europe today and yesterday, Madonna dropped a brand new single!  The song is called Medellin and it features Colombian reggaeton superstar Maluma.  I can't really describe it better than Ann Powers at NPR:

The first single from Madonna's upcoming Madame X suggests that the doyenne of dance pop is making canny decisions in her 60th year. "Medellin" is a carefully dosed combination of the coolly narcotic dance-pop she's often made with the track's producer, Mirwais, and the energetic reggaetón of the track's featured guest, the Colombian star Maluma, and suggests this global pop sound will be the foundation of her fourteenth studio album. Starting with a whispered "one, two, cha cha cha" from Queen Madge that lends the arrangement a witty vintage feel, the song proceeds to relate a fantasy that's both sexy and slightly nostalgic. "I took a pill and had a dream," Madonna murmurs, her voice artfully Auto-tuned. "I went back to my seventeenth year."

Well, I love the sound and am so looking forward to the new record due out in June.  In the meantime, here's Medellin...

Well, I am off to Amsterdam and s few other places for the next twenty days, so I will catch you on the other side!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Like a Prayer - Madonna

Image result for like a prayer

It's really hard to believe it's been that long, but this week Madonna's Like a Prayer turns 30.  I remember the song's release like it was yesterday...lots of buzz, lots of controversy, lots of excitement.  The song is still my favorite Madonna song of all time and I am only too happy to share it always.  Here's Like a Prayer...

I Love the 90's Month Song of the Day - Secret - Madonna

Image result for secret madonna

The style of the first single off Madonna's 1994 Bedtime Stories picked up right where Erotica left off, complete with a melancholic sound, great lyrics, some pretty mesmerizing humming, and an equally artistic video shot in black and white.  It also happens to be one of my favorite Madonna songs of all time.  Here's Secret...

Song of the Day - Wash Over Me - Madonna, Avicii

Image result for wash over me madonna avicii

In a world that's changing
I'm a stranger in a strange land
There's a contradiction
And I'm stuck here in between

Life is like a desert
An a oasis to confuse me
So I walk this razors edge
Will I stand or will I fall?

Turn a blind eye, try to pretend that nothing is what it seems
Torn between the impulse to stay or running away from all this madness

Who am I
To decide what should be done
If this is the end then let it come
Let it come
Let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it flow
Let it wash all over me
Over me

Song of the Day - Like a Prayer - Madonna

Image result for like a prayer

Somebody asked me the other day what my favorite Madonna song.  Though there are plenty of her songs that are special to me, Like a Prayer will always win.  Sing it with me now...

When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees
I want to take you there....

Song of the Day - I'll Remember - Madonna

It was just recently that I had to be reminded about today.  Not that I forgot, mind you, but I just met a person for whom this day, 17 years ago now, holds a special place in his soul.  Listening to him talk about it reminded me of how I felt that day, and how passionate I was about it in the years that followed.  But as with most things, with time the memories, and the rawness, faded, and this is something that I need to keep alive in my mind somehow, some way.  Never forget!

The kids in my school are among the first generations of people to not have even been born when it happened and I need to remind them today, to talk about it, to make them know what happened on that terrible day in my city.  I'm pretty sure I'm just going to talk about it from my own point of view.  I still remember that day vividly, where I was when it all unfolded, how I personally dealt with the aftermath.  So I take a moment here to remember and never forget the horrible events of September 11th, 2001 with a song...

Here are a few pieces I've written about the day over the years.  I found that reading them really brought it back to life for me and I hope it will for you too.  Please check out one or two of them:

L-U-V Madonna!

Today is Madonna's birthday and we are celebrating with the lead single off her 2012 MDNA record.  The song is not one of her most popular, but it is totally fun and I actually danced to it in a club in Paris a few weeks ago.  It also expresses what a lot of us feel about the Queen.  Happy Birthday Madonna!

Pride Month Song of the Day - Express Yourself - Madonna

Don't go for second best baby
Put your love to the test
You know you know you've got to
Make him express how he feels
And then you'll know your love is real

Before there was Ariana.  Before Gaga, there was Madonna.  Aside from her knack for creating songs that pleased the masses for years, Madonna has long used her status to stand up for those who are sometimes not stood up for, and I, we, would like to thank her from the bottom of our gay little hearts!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - American Life - Madonna

Image result for american life

April 21st marked the 15th anniversary of one of Madonna's most underrated albums, American Life and we mark the anniversary with the title cut, which was controversial because of its' criticism of the Bush Administration.  In fact, two videos were made for the song, the first of which featured Madonna throwing a hand grenade at the former Commander in Chief.  That one got scrapped!  Here's the second vid for a song that many didn't love, but for whatever reason I do.  Check out American Life...

Song of the Day - Wash Over Me (Avicii Mix) - Madonna

Image result for wash all over me avicii

One of my favorite songs ever is Madonna's Wash Over Me, but not the version from the Rebel Heart album, the Avicii remix which was tragically never released.  Our honoree of the week, the late Avicii, took a drab, but beautifully written song and turned it into an inspirational dance masterpiece.  I don't know how long this will stay up here because many previous incarnations of the mysteriously guarded tune have disappeared, so take a listen while you can...
