One of my favorite songs of all time is very appropriate for these days.  It's very easy to lose faith and despair over the situation we find ourselves in, but we've got to be vigilant, see this through, and hopefully someday soon we'll be right back to where we started from.  Happy Friday!

I was browsing YouTube randomly the other day and came across this video by a guy who calls himself Jamel_AKA_Jamal, and in it, he was reacting to hearing The Carpenters' Superstar for the very first time. I tell ya, it feels like oldies week here at John's Music World.  First it was KISS, then The Verve, Queen, and now Diana Ross.  I feel remiss that I didn't post a Diana song yesterday, for it was her 75th birthday.  Like KISS, Miss Ross was one of my earlier musical favorites and she will always have a special place in my musical heart.  Here she is performing one of her best hits of the disco era, the sultry, fun, dancey Love Hangover...

It's funny, but two days after, I've still got KISS on my mind and especially this song, which they didn't even play the other night.  I think that over the years, this one's become my favorite KISS song ever...I love the lyrics and the mood of the song and I especially love Peter Criss' raspy vocals.  Once again, this time spotlighted, Hard Luck Woman...

In case you haven't heard the news, I am sorry to be the one breaking it to you, but Daryl Dragon, the "Captain" in the pop duo Captain & Tenille, passed away late yesterday at the age of 76.  I never thought I'd be posting one of their songs here, but they were undeniably a part of my musical youth.  Who remembers, but I probably even had one or two of their albums back in the 70's when they were popular and I was a pre-teen.  Their songs were everywhere back then and if you were around at the time, you surely remember pop ditties like Shop Around, Muskrat Love, Do That To Me One More Time, and this one, their first big hit which earned them a Grammy back in 75.  Here's the still so catchy Love Will Keep Us Together...

Song of the Day - I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing - Coca Cola '71/The New Seekers

Continuing along the track I started to set yesterday, here is a song that's perfect for Christmas, yet not a Christmas song in the traditional sense.  Joy, peace, and harmony, that's what Christmas should be about.  It's too bad that it's become what it has, for if we really, truly followed what the season is supposed to be about, the world would be so much a better place.  (Yup, I'm still kind of a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas, lol).  

Anyhow, I was seven years old when I first heard this song, and like many of you who know it, you know it from the 1971 Coca Cola television commercial.  The commercial showed a multi-cultural group of teenagers singing about peace and harmony...and of course, Coke!  The song became so popular, it was recorded without the Coke references by a group called the New Seekers and hit the top ten in the U.S.  Here are both versions of the song, starting with the original...

With a brand new album of ABBA cover songs and a tour on the way, Cher is once again in the spotlight.  It's been awhile since I took a listen to her, but I delved into my Cher playlist yesterday and though there were plenty of songs to choose from, somehow I found myself going back to the beginning.  Some of my favorite Cher songs are those from her early days, especially three story-telling tunes that really put her on the map in the early 70's.  Of course, I'm talking about Half Breed, Dark Lady and this one, her very first #1 song.  Check out Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves... 

Song of the Day - Lucky - Donna Summer

I said the other day when I posted Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby that I might just post another or two of her songs in the coming days.  Well, here's one I never thought I'd post, but I personally love it so much I just want to share it.  Lucky was a non-single included on Donna's monumental Bad Girls album of 1979 and it dispels any sort of claim that disco music was mindless.  This song combines a masterfully orchestrated dance track with some pretty sad lyrics...a lonely, yet naive girl who's looking for love, but only seems to find the wrong kinds of love.  Check out the lyrics below as you crank up the volume on this one, and if you don't like it then there's something seriously wrong with you!  (I'm just kidding, lol...but it is soooo good!).  Here's Lucky...

Song of the Day - Love to Love You Baby - Donna Summer

Anyone who knows me personally from social media would most definitely have guessed that they'd be hearing a Donna Summer song in today's Song of the Day.  That's because my mom and I went into New York City yesterday to see Summer: The Musical.  Though the show itself left something to be desired, the music was what made it all worthwhile.  

I was always a big fan of Donna Summer and followed her throughout the years and I especially loved her music after her reluctant "Queen of Disco" period.  Alas, without the disco, though, she might never have made it as far as she did.  You may very well see more Donna Summer here this week, but for today here's the song that figured prominently in the musical and it was the one that got it all started for her.  Check out a vintage performance of the sexy Love to Love You Baby...
