A few weeks ago my friend Sonny sent me a text suggesting these two songs that both had to do about going back to the 90's, a wonderful decade for sure!  As I do often, I didn't have time to answer the text at the moment, and I never got around to answering it or even remembering it until now.  The first song was Ladies in the 90's, by Lauren Alaina, which I admit I haven't checked out more than once or twice, and the other is this catchy little ditty by Charli XCX, featuring guest vocals by Troye Sivan.  Love!  Here's 1999...

New Music Fridays, May 11th, 2018

Hello and welcome back to New Music Fridays, a weekly look at some of the best in new music releases of the week.  As always, we've got some nice pop sensations and tasty beats to whet your musical whistle, so without further adieu...

Girls - Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX, Cardi B

One of the most talked-about songs of the week is this one by Rita Ora, featuring Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX and Cardi B.  First of all, musically the song is catchy and pleasing, and of course the bisexual themes are going to be controversial.  Singer Hayley Kiyoko, who put out her own song about bisexual issues, spoke out against the song as being one that works to fuel the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women.  Perhaps!  Ora addressed the criticism here, and in the meantime here's Girls...

Back to You - Selena Gomez

The Netflix Original Series 13 Reasons Why has returned for a second season and Selena Gomez recorded a sweet, sweet song for its' soundtrack, with softly sung verses and an uplifting chorus.  Check out the ear-pleasing Back to You...

Stay Open - Diplo, MO

Diplo released two new songs this week, one with Sia and Labrinth, and this one with Danish singer MO (one of these days I'll learn to get that "O" right!).  Though they're both nice tunes, I tend to find this one a little more pleasing.  Stay Open has got a nice sound to it, nice bright beats and very dancey. Walls - NVDES

I tell ya, I am really digging the sounds of LA-based production team NVDES.  Seemingly every tune they put out ends up on  my Current playlist and this one will be no different.  Yet another bit of neo-disco, this one makes you make all the funky moves you used to make as a kid, whether it was to something by Earth, Wind & Fire or even more recently Stardust's Music Sounds Better With You, from which I believe this tune is sampled.  Check out the groovy Walls... 

Sirens - Gold Fir

Either I'm going crazy or there's another new wave of neo-disco coming at us in droves.  The third such tune to revive some of the sounds of the 70's is this soulful jam by British duo Gold Fir.  Check out another awesome, funky track, Sirens...

Though this one was released in February of last year, it became a hot summer jam all season long in 2015.  It took me a long time to like this one, but once I did there was no turning back.  That bass hook is so irresistible, and of course the lyrics and the raps complete the reason why Fancy was such a huge hit.  Check it out and have a great Thursday....   

Song of the Day - Right Here, Right Now - Giorgio Moroder, featuring Kylie Minogue

Interesting collaboration, great song!  That's my first impression of this energetic, neo-disco tune that's got 1978 written all over it.  Moroder, who is famous for his work back in the day with the likes of the legendary Donna Summer, is preparing to release a new album soon, his first in 30 years, featuring guest vocals from the likes of Britney Spears, Mikky Ekko, Sia, Charli XCX and more. This one, featuring the great Kylie Minogue makes for a great opener!  The track is already available on iTunes, so check that out after the vid...
