Good morning from the beautiful city of Toronto. Like the cheeseball I am, as soon as we hit the Canadian border I wanted to play music of Canadian artists. Of course one of the first ones I thought of was the Biebs, and so today's Song of the Day...
Happy Friday from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I haven't been able to post for a couple of days because there was no WiFi in Sandusky, Ohio, our most recent stop, but here I am, ready to go once again with a Flashback Friday Song of the Day. We've been hearing a lot of Nicki Minaj in the car this week, especially her latest guest vocals on Katy Perry's Swish Swish and Jason Derulo's Swalla, and so I thought I'd post one of her own hits for Flashback Friday. Check out the always fun Starships...
Good morning and Happy Monday from Cincinnati, Ohio. We're on the first day of our Roller Coaster Road Trip 2017 and I'll be doing my best to keep Song of the Day going, and probably with tunes we've been listening to in the car. First up is yet another artist who's been long absent from the new music scene and that is Ms. Kylie. Here's the opening track to her 2010 Aphrodite album.
Check out All the Lovers and then go on a have a lovely day...
Harry Styles debut solo album is awesome, full of mature, well-written and performed tunes that'll be on my playlist for a long time to come. Very impressed! Here's the first single from the eponymous album, a dramatic opus to well, a Sign of the Times...
Hey and welcome back to John's Music World New Music Fridays. This has been a tough week for new releases and choosing five good songs from among this week's crop was tough, but there are definitely at least a couple of interesting new tracks to grab a hold of. Check it out...
Would You Mind - PRETTYMUCH
Former American Idol brainchild and judge Simon Cowell has had a hand in creating boy bands before, helping to launch the careers of Brit boy bands like One Direction and Westlife, and now his newest project, PRETTYMUCH, has debuted their very first single and it definitely stands out among this week's crop of new tunes. The song hearkens back to Bel Biv DeVoe and is sugary pop at its best. Check it out...
Sunny Days - Bel Heir
Up next is something so new that it's not apparently found anywhere on the Internet yet. The tune is by alternative rockers Bel Heir and for a more rockish tune, I am liking it a lot. If you use Spotify, you can surely find it there and check it out.
Almost Home - Sultan + Shephard
Grammy nominated producers Sultan + Shephard have come up with a groovin' track that's likable from the very first chords. The vocals are great and the tune starts out a little chill, but crescendoes about midway through into a nice up tempo sound. Nice track!
Do You Think About Me - NDVES
Here's another track found on Spotify that I don't see anywhere else yet, but definitely worthy of a listen. Do You Think About Me is definitely a chill tune, very smooth and pretty catchy. Check it out on Spotify.
Interweb - Poppy
This last tune is a sexy, bass-thumping, late night potential dance floor filler! There's little out there on the artist Poppy, though you can check out her Twitter page here, and you should definitely check out Interweb right here...
Here is one of my choices from last week's debut of my new feature, New Music Fridays. John Splithoff is an indie artist who's just put out only his third song in as many years, and this, his latest, is a pleasant, summery nugget that I loved the very first time I heard it. Check out Show Me...
I mentioned in a post last night how upset I've been that P!nk hasn't come out with a new album since 2012, that the album, The Truth About Love moved me so much, virtually every song. Well here's a great example of what a great great songwriter she is. The Great Escape, like all of P!nk's other songs, are written by her with a meaning that is only gleaned through her. She's said that she likes fans to take their own meaning out of her songs and this one I think we all can relate to in one way or another. Check out the beautiful The Great Escape...
I've been contemplating writing a post on P!nk, a complaint piece actually. On September 18th, it will have been five years since her masterpiece, The Truth About Love, was released. My post was going to express frustration at the absence of a new album, how I was so moved by that one and then, still five years on, nothing! Oh sure, she's done a couple of singles since then (Just Like Fire, Waterfall, with Sia, and Setting the World on Fire, with Kenny Chesney. and of course You & Me, the not too enthralling 2014 collaboration album with folk singer Dallas Green, but no new album of just P!nk. .
I know that she had another baby in December, an adorable little boy named Jameson Moon, so I understand she's been busy, but Jeez! Five years? Well, from a couple of notices I've received, it looks like maybe, just maybe, a new album is FINALLY on the way. The exhaltingly talented singer/songwriter tweeted on July 16th that she was shooting a new video next week. Fingers are definitely crossed, and I know I've written these types of posts before, but hey, you never know! I sooooo need something new to grab onto from her. In the meantime, check out one of my favorite tracks from The Truth,. Here's Timebomb...
I heard this song for the first time in a really long time the other night. It's funny, but my favorite Calvin Harris songs are the ones where he provides the vocals. It's a great summer song, so check out Feel So Close...
I have a new favorite song! After reviewing this past week's new releases and sharing my five best in my new New Music Fridays post, there was one song that stood out from all the rest. It's rare that I like a song so much, so quickly, but it happens, and with Beth Ditto's In & Out, all I can say is woof! The song is undeniably retro and undeniably head bopping, finger snapping and hypnotic. Her voice is so rich and the beats...well, they're what give the song its overall feel. This should definitely be heard, so...
Hey and welcome to John's Music World New Music Fridays. I haven't posted anything non-Song of the Day in awhile and I thought it was about time I got back into some other music business, namely new music. I often post new tunes in my regular posts, but I don't always get to all of the ones I like. Friday is the global day for new music releases and so I thought I'd start a new weekly post on my favorite new songs, gems that have come under my radar at first listen in the hopes of becoming a regular in my rotation. I don't always get it right, but there are enough tunes that do end up on my playlist...and Song of the Day.
So here's our first installment. Five new tunes that'll hopefully catch your ear as they did mine. Please take note: these posts will almost NEVER be done on a Friday...sorry, but I needs time and I've got a life, too!
In & Out - Beth Ditto
Okay, so I've never heard of Beth Ditto until just this morning when I discovered this awesome, finger-snapping little gem. Turns out she was the lead singer in a band called Gossip and she just released her very first solo album, from which this song comes. In & Out has a groovin' retro feel to it, with a background guitar riff set to Ditto's sultry, beautiful voice. Check it out...
Woman - Ke$ha
One of the biggest news stories to come out of the music world lately is the return of Ke$ha to the music scene. After releasing a new single, the solemn and tender Praying, just two weeks ago, the beleaguered singer/songwriter returns with a more up tempo, in-your-face female empowerment tune that's more like a hard-driving country, bluesy tune than the dance stuff she's known for, and done very well at that. And we all know where she's coming from, too. The woman is talented! Check out Woman...
Show Me - John Splithoff, with Madison Ryann Ward
Chicago native John Splithoff is an independent artist who's just released only his third song and I loved it the first time I heard it. It's a happy tune full of nice grooves, smooth vocals and a whole lotta soul. Check it out...
Sorry Not Sorry - Demi Lovato
Fans of Demi Lovato are going to love this brand new steamy torch song, her first in awhile and it's a definite winner. Check out the singer performing Sorry Not Sorry live...
Miracles (Someone Special) - Coldplay, with Big Sean
Now I've never been a big Coldplay fan. I've always found their music kind of depressing, but ever since they worked with The Chainsmokers on Something Just Like Thisthey seem to be a little more upbeat. Just take this one, an unlikely collaboration with rapper Big Sean. Check out this brand new ear candy...
So there you have it, five brand new tunes to check out. I hope you found these suggestions useful and please stay tuned for more...
I am loving Swedish songstress Zara Larsson, and having recently been to Sweden I can testify that she's pretty darned popular there too! Her album, So Good, is just that, full of catchy pop tunes that'll keep you singing along the whole way through. Here's one such song, the third single off So Good. Check out the brash Ain't My Fault...
Justin Bieber, for not having a new album of his own, has been keeping really busy in the time since his 2015 Purpose record. His latest guest vocal is with legendary deejay/producer David Guetta, and the result is yet another dance/pop smoothie that will most likely be heard...a lot! Check out 2U...
We go way back to 1982 with a post-disco era classic by recording artist Sylvester, a pioneer who paved the way for trans artists we see all over the place today. Great song, great artist! Enjoy...
Here's a really smooth neo-disco groove by five guys from Australia who call themselves Parcel. As soon as I heard this one the first time, I immediately thought Get Lucky, and when I checked out info on the tune this morning, lo and behold it was co-written and co-produced by none other than Daft Punk. Check out Overnight...
My girl Kiiara's got a brand new single out, and it's a perfect tune for Hump Day. Fresh off her massive success with Gold comes this sexy, sultry jam with (almost) the same equally fast-paced vocal as its predecessor, and her voice is, well, sooo highly unique. Check out Whippin'....
I just love a happy, inspirational, chill tune! This remix of Powers' Sunshine is exactly that, very chill, with a melody that's very uplifting, and of course, sunshiney! Check it out...
I never sat by the shore, under the sun with my feet in the sand
But you brought me here and I'm happy that you did
'Cause now I'm as free as birds catching the wind
I always thought I would sink, so I never swam
I never went boatin'; don't get how they're floatin'
And sometimes I get so scared of what I can't understand
But here I am, next to you
The sky's more blue in Malibu
Next to you, in Malibu
Next to you...
Well I'm back from my little adventure in the woods of Pennsylvania, and like most any trip away from home, there are certain songs that will forever remind me of this fun and relaxing time. I spent a good portion of my weekend laying out by the pool, and that time was accompanied by a great selection of music, which included several recent Songs of the Day. Miley Cyrus' Malibu was one of those songs, and it was during this weekend that the very essence of this beautiful song gripped me whole. If you were to ask my friend Sonny what song would remind her of this weekend, I'm pretty sure she'd say that this was the one, too! Check out Malibu...
Stock, Aitken, and Waterman. Back in the late 180's this musical production team had their sound all over the radio and in dance clubs. From Dead or Alive to Rick Astley to Bananarama, their sound was hot! And then these two girls came along, sisters named Mel and Kim, and smashed it out with this, one of my favorite songs of that year. Check out the fast and funky Respectable...
Note - I will be away for the weekend and will return with Song of the Day Monday.
Do you remember Nico and Vinz? Yeah, back in 2014 they put out that oh so smooth and hypnotic Am I Wrong? Well, I've been checking out some of the Norwegian duo's stuff and they've just put out a new tune that's pretty damned hypnotic as well. Check out the brand new Intrigued...
It's been a long, long time since I've posted anything Lily Allen. Here's the debut single from her last album, 2014's Sheezus. Hard Out Here is flashy and funny and like all of Lily's tunes, an authentic and scathing commentary on life. Check it out...
I've been going through some of my old iTunes playlists and I came across this classic 80's sounding jam. Great song! Check out Duke Dumont's Ocean Drive...
How did I not know this song, or this band, when they were at the top of their game? Luckily, I caught this fun tune with Shazam over the loudspeakers in a store, and now I plan to check out more of this funky, all-girl, alternative band from the 90's. If you don't know it, or even if you do, please check out Naked Eye...
Here's a little reggae tune I found on Spotify that's a perfect, feel-good summer song. It sounds more like classic reggae than some of the stuff I hear today. Check it out...
