If you were around in the early 90's, you might recognize the infectious grooves in Jason Derulo's latest hip shaker. Check out Jason as he resurrects his inner Chaka Demus and Pliers on Too Hot...
During the summer I like to listen to a lot of reggae music. There's something about the island jams that really gets me in the spirit of the season. On that note, here's an oldie but goodie, a cover of a Jimmy Cliff song by a band called Rockers Revenge. Check out the irresistible The Harder They Come...
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Summer is unofficially here and it's time to start with some summer jams. We'll be celebrating summer over the next month or so with a genre of music that I absolutely love, dance rap. We get it started with more of a reggae-tinged dance rap tune, and a classic one at that. Since this song put the bug in my ear to feature the genre for the month (I'm actually looking for a beema!), well, here's Beenie Man...
Here's a song I spotlighted from last week's crop of great new music, a nice easygoing dancehall collaboration between Rudimental and Major Lazer and featuring the rich, soulful voice of Anne-Marie and a little bit of rap flavor with Mr. Eazi. Check out Let Me Live...
Here's a little reggae tune I found on Spotify that's a perfect, feel-good summer song. It sounds more like classic reggae than some of the stuff I hear today. Check it out...
Here's a reggae flavored jam I haven't heard in a long, long time. It comes from a time when seemingly all music was great...the 1990's. Max-A-Million had several hits in the mid-90's, all reggae-ish and all good, including remakes of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing and S.O.S.'s Take Your Time, and of course this one, my favorite. Check out the fun Fat Boy...
Took the day off yesterday to collect my senses after what happened on Tuesday, but I'm back. Ooh, it's been a long time since I've caught on to anything new and reggae...ish. This fun tune by Tanzanian born, Britain raised Tiggs Da Author is just that...fun! And the guest vocals by the sexy Lady Leshurr are the perfect complement to the fun and funky tune. Check out Run...
Reggae music is at the very essence of many a summer jam. Hearkening back to warm island breezes, the beach, dancing on the sand, reggae sounds are often used in all kinds of music, and French deejay/producer Bob Sinclair is very adept at blending reggae sounds with dance beats to create some pretty uplifting summer jams. Here's a Bob Sinclair tune from 2007 that effectively samples Rozalla's Everybody's Free (to Feel Good). Check outthe fast and frenzied Sound of Freedom...
Back in the year 2001, Jamaican reggae artist Shaggy was smoking hot with his album Hot Shot, which produced the monster hits It Wasn't Me, Luv Me, Luv Me and this one, a #1 feel-good tune that's as sweet as it is catchy. Happy Friday y'all...enjoy!
Oh man, I hope you're reliving these memories as fondly as I am. A couple of weeks ago, when I was doing 90's summer jams, I couldn't help but marvel at all of the great music that came out of that decade and here we are, four days into celebrating reggae jams and all of the ones I've shared have come out of the 90's, too. Here's a classic from Jamaican duo Chaka Demus and Pliers, with a fast-paced down-home fun reggae jam that ya just can't help but move to. Check out Murder, She Wrote...
Some of you may remember Gwen Stefani's version of this classic reggae jam. To many, nothing's ever as good as the original, and that is so the case with this one. The tune, by Brit one hit wonders Louchie Lou and Michie One, takes the melody from Fiddler On the Roof's If I Were a Rich Man and gives it both a modern, feminine twist as well as some hypnotic reggae beats. This one always got them going on the dance floor back in the day when I was a deejay. By the way, what the heck is a ragamuffin anyway????
Good morning and Happy Tuesday! Here's a reggae summer jam that is very pleasing to the ears. It's yet another song from the fabulous 90's by a short-lived, but very successful band called Max-A-Million. If you don't know it, click play...you're gonna love it!
Alright, well we've got a new theme for this week's summer jams. Nothing hearkens a warm sunny summer day like reggae music, and there are plenty of great summer reggae jams to fit this bill. First up is a 1999 reworking of a classic Bob Marley tune, Sun Is Shining. The song gained a whole new set of fans back when production crew Funkstar Deluxe reworked it into a whole new dance tune, and since the sun IS shining today after several days of overcast skies, it is the perfect summer jam for the day. So whether you are working or just beginning summer vacation like I am, just take a moment, click play below and appreciate that warm wonderful sun!
You know, summer jams aren't always about dance music in the club sense like I usually tend to gravitate towards. No, there are other types of tunes that can be considered summer jams, like this one, No Doubt's classic 1995 smash Spiderwebs. Gwen Stefani and company were all about the ska, descendant of reggae, and so most ot their tunes fit right in with beaches and sunshine and warm weather. So if you were around in the mid-nineties you're certainly going to remember this...
Here's a reggae jam from an artist who calls himself OMI. The song was released in 2012 and became a hit in several countries, but not here in the U.S. That's too bad, because even though the context of the tune is a little silly, it's got a nice, summery feel to it. So I'm just gonna play this one a couple of times today and imagine...
