When I hear this song from Louis Tomlinson's upcoming debut album, Walls, I'm brought back to some of the great alternative music of the nineties. Click play and see if you agree. Here's We Made It...
Alternative band OneRepublic have a new song out that's pretty catchy. It's the band's first single since 2018's Connection and the video stars Dancing With the Stars: Junior Edition's Cody Bingham who fends of a gang of bullies with his super dance moves. Pretty entertaining! Check out Rescue Me...
It's been 20 years since the release of the epic film, Cruel Intentions, with Sara Michele Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, and Ryan Phillippe, and I just saw it for the first time on Saturday. (I know, right?) Anyway, great movie, nice soundtrack, and this song played perfectly as the background to an epic ending. Here's Bittersweet Symphony...
I'm not really sure whether I'd ever even heard of Vampire Weekend earlier than like a month ago, but they're one of my newest favorite acts. Just a coupe of weeks back I posted their great Harmony Hall, and now this newer song's gaining quite the buzz. Check out the smooth, cool Sunflower...
I don't know why, but all of these alternative bands have been piquing my interest lately. This new one by Kentucky-based band Cage the Elephant is just a good song, plain and simple. Here's Ready to Let Go...
Here's a relatively new tune by indie band Vampire Weekend from their forthcoming fourth studio album, Father of the Bride. Comparisons to Grateful Dead and Paul Simon have been made regarding this song, and I could see that, but still it's a unique in its own right. The pleasantness of this tune grew on me really fast, and if you don't know it, maybe it will on you too! Here's Harmony Hall...
One of the long-stays of the punk/alternative scene was born in the 80's, but thrived in the 90's. Green Day, still around and going strong, had a string of hits throughout the decade that brought them one of the most devoted fan bases around. Here's the 4th single off their monumental Dookie album. Check out When I Come Around...
Well the month is coming towards an end and I'm already getting sad that it's almost time to finish with this fun month of awesome 90's music. One genre I really haven't touched on yet is one that was very popular early on in the decade, but eventually waned into what we now call alternative music. I'm talking about the grunge movement, made popular by bands such as Nirvana, Stone Tempe Pilots, Pearl Jam, and so many more. In 1996, this little known "post-grunge" alternative band out of LA put out this song that simply moved me. Here's Tonic and If You Can Only See...
Just finished watching The Real World Miami this weekend and one of the songs that was featured was this little tune I swear I'd never heard nor heard of, which surprised both my bf and myself. It's got that unmistakable 90's background beat made famous by Soul II Soul, yet this one's definitely more to the alternative side than dance/soul. Pretty cool! Check out Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand...
One of the most notable genres to come out of the 80's was the alternative movement. Though Canadian singer Tal Bachman might not be the first person you think of when you think of alternative music, his 1999 song She's So High surely fits the bill as one of the great alternative songs of the decade. Check it out...
I mentioned before that watching old episodes of MTV's The Real World has brought back so many memories, not only of the show, but musically as well. Here's a classic alternative track by a classic Alternative band, Smashing Pumpkins. Here's Today...
Coming at you from all the way back in 1995 is none other than the Presidents of the United States of America with their alternative classic, Lump. This one goes out to Vinny! Here's Lump...
Ever since I wrote my last post for John's World the other day, I've had this song in my head and knew I wanted to post it for Flashback Friday. It's been awhile since I've posted anything alternative, and this song carries the same message, and title, lol, as that post. Here's You Get What You Give...
Here's a nice alternative pop song that turned up more search results concerning the affairs of our country than the song I was searching for. Great tune, btw...
I'm still not sure exactly what to make of the band Portugal. The Man. My very first experience with the Portland, Oregon-based alternative band was their very funkdified jam, Feel It Still, though they've been around since 2004. Ever since hearing that one, I've kept a keen eye on them, hoping for more of the same. I've seen a couple of new releases from their current album, Woodstock, but nothing's excited me. That is, until now. The familiarity of this cover is immediately felt, and the bands newest, an homage to Oasis, is a wonderful addition to their catalog. I think I'll keep on watching and listening. In the meantime, check out an acoustic studio version of Oasis' Don't Look Back In Anger...
