Of course, the biggest news was the release of Ariana Grande's Sweetener, but none of the new songs on the album match the intensity of its' first three singles. One of the most interesting new music tracks of the week comes from Calvin Harris, featuring the beautiful voice of Sam Smith on vocals. Promises is Smith's first foray into dance music since guesting on Disclosure's 2013 Latch, and to me this one is way easier to get into. I usually shy away from Smith, mostly because I'm not a huge fan of ballads, but this one is oh so good. Check out Promises...

This one's got the feel of a vintage Janet tune, happy and catchy, and the addition of Daddy Yankee into the fold will surely expand the listening base of this one. Today is Madonna's birthday and we are celebrating with the lead single off her 2012 MDNA record. The song is not one of her most popular, but it is totally fun and I actually danced to it in a club in Paris a few weeks ago. It also expresses what a lot of us feel about the Queen. I was listening to Shakira yesterday and knew I would play one of her songs today because they're all fiery and well-suited for Hump Day. This one, sung in Spanish, is one of my favorite songs of hers. When I first saw that David Guetta was working with Anne-Marie, I got really excited. I never heard of the British trio known as Years & Years before, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. This song was one I had bookmarked during research for New Music Fridays a few weeks ago and then it slowly crept into my consciousness. The music in the song sounds like it may be sampling Lauryn Hill's Everything Is Everything, yet the vocals are a whole other vibe. With the exciting news of Robyn's Missing U, I thought it would be a good time to revisit what made me and so many others fall in love with her in the first place. Although the Swedish singer put out music as far back as the 90's, it was 2010's trio of albums called Body Talk that really grew her audience and her fan base. Those albums are literally filled with thought-provoking lyrics and musically sound pop dance. I'd be hard pressed to find a tune from those records that I didn't like...a lot.
So in a week full of Robyn tunes, mostly from the Body Talk series, we begin with a song that appears twice in the set. Indestructible first appeared as a beautiful acoustic number that would fit well at a wedding, while later on it was remixed into an EDM track that's equally irresistible. Here's Indestructible...

What sparked my interest in this song was the inclusion of Alex Clare. Now I don't know much about the British singer/songwriter, but his 2011 song Too Close is among my all time favorites. Spotify did this crazy amazing thing. They created a playlist especially for me called Summer Rewind, and it's full of songs I played all summer long last year. A lot of those songs were played and enjoyed by me and my friends on our wonderful Roller Coaster Road Trip, and one of thesongs we listened to the most was this, Katy Perry's fun Swish Swish...
I always say that when I go to Europe, I always hear songs that I haven't heard in years, and this past trip was no exception. Between listening to the radio or hearing music on the street or just me and Amy singing old jams to each other, I heard all sorts of older songs, from Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go to Ludacris' Move Bitch Get Out Da Way to the Jackson 5's I Want You Back. We even heard Miley Cyrus' Party In the U.S.A. in a club! Strange!
One song that stands out is Berlin's The Metro. I believe it first came up on my third or fourth day in Lausanne, Switzerland, and I think it was just being on a train that put the song in our heads.
