We wrap up our year in songs and our week-long tribute to the late George Michael with one of his most popular and at the time, most controversial, songs. I Want Your Sex was the lead single to George's breakout debut, Faith, and it's still as hot today as it was way back in 1987. Check it out...

Song of the Day - Freedom! 90 - George Michael
Good morning and Happy Friday! Since Friday is my favorite day of the week, I've saved my favorite George Michael song for today's post. Freedom 90 (for those of you who may have wondered, the 90 in the song was thrown into the title so as to distinguish this song from a previous Wham! song also called Freedom) is Michael's only bona fide anthem, with a chorus that you just can't help but belt out when you take a listen.
The music video for Freedom 90 is uniquely iconic, as well. At the time, George was said to be struggling with his own fame and preferred not to make an appearance in it, opting for several top models of the day to appear instead, lip-syncing the tune. Throughout the video we see supermodels Naomi Cambell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, John Pearson, Mario Sorrenti, Scott Benoit, Todo Segalla, and Peter Formby striking poses and singing along in what you could imagine is a visually stunning six minutes. The concept worked, as the vid to this song is one of George's most memorable ever. So without further adieu, check out the inspirational Freedom 90...

Song of the Day - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham!
Here's the one that started it all for fans of George Michael. Although, the duo had put out a previous record a year earlier (1983's Fantastic), they really did not make any sort of waves until their appropriately titled sophomore set, Make It Big, and this fun dancey number was both the album's first single and the duo's first #1 hit...

Song of the Day - Faith - George Michael
One of George Michael's biggest hit ever was this rockabilly tune from his breakout solo album of the same name. In fact, it was the biggest selling single here in the U.S. for the year 1988. Check out the fun Faith...

Song of the Day - I'm Your Man - Wham!
Like many of you out there, I've been listening to a lot of George Michael the last couple of days Here's an early favorite of mine from George and Andrew Ridgeley's third and final album together, Music from the Edge of Heaven. The tune is one of those sugary dance/pop gems I'd mentioned yesterday and simply a whole lotta fun! Check out I'm Your Man...

Song of the Day - Praying for Time - George Michael
The year 2016 was a terrible year for celebrity deaths, and yesterday the trend continued as singer/songwriter George Michael unexpectedly passed away on Christmas Day. He was only 53 years old. The news of George's passing left fans around the world in shock, and even I feel like somehow this terrible news is not true. Like any other death, it will take time to sink in, and it will, but for now...wow, just wow.
Since those early days of Wham! back in the early to mid-eighties, George Michael has graced us all with his own unique gift of music. From sugary pop tunes like Wake Me Up Before You GoGo and I'm Your Man to his sexual solo awakening to a more contemplative state later on, George enjoyed a prolific career, and luckily for us, we still have his music to enjoy.
Of course, this tragic event calls for a week-long celebration of George's music, and I hope you will enjoy reliving these special tunes with me, as they represent even a small part of the greater soundtrack to our lives. Today's song is very fitting, and sadly it was George's very last #1 tune way back in 1990. Take a listen to the melancholic Praying for Time...

A Christmas Song of the Day - The Little Drummer Boy - Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
Today we have a Christmas classic that's another one of my all-time favorites, There are so many versions of The Little Drummer Boy that have been recorded, and though I traipsed through more than a few I still find Bob Seger's version to be the most authentic. Such a melancholic song, such a great rendition! Check out Bob performing it live...

A Christmas Song of the Day - Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
As we move another day closer to Christmas, here's one of my all time favorite holiday tunes. The Waitresses were your typical new wave band, with a crazy, frenzied sound that was simply irresistible and this was one of two songs of theirs that are among new wave's best. Check out the classic Christmas Wrapping...

A Special Christmas Song of the Day - Do They Know It's Christmas? - Band Aid
More than 20 years ago, a group of artists got together to record a special holiday song to raise funds for the millions in Africa suffering from malnutrition. Well, there is never a shortage of people in need, both her in America and around the world. In these past few years, and especially the past few weeks and months, the people living in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, have been suffering some of the worst kinds of atrocities, caught in the cross-hairs of a bloody civil war.
So as you head out to the mall to do catch the latest bargain on things from your Christmas list, please be mindful of how lucky you are to be doing that, because halfway around the world, a great many people, many of them children, are suffering. And if you'd like to take part in the spirit of the season, you can help out the innocent victims of this human tragedy by donating to the International Rescue Committee. I know I will. In the meantime, enjoy a Christmas classic...

Best of 2016 Song of the Day - More Than a Miracle - MNEK
If the mountains could be moved for you,
And the ocean could be split right through
It still wouldn't be enough for you,
It's true, it's true, it's true!
If I told you sweet nothings everyday
I'd trip up on every word I say
One step closer, yet still miles away
I pray at night, I pray
One of my favorite tunes of 2016 comes from a singer I know very little about, except his name...and his voice. Earlier in the year, MNEK released a song I immediately LOVED and upon listening to it again this morning, I am sure I'll be listening to it much more later today and in the next few weeks. More Than a Miracle is combination soul/R&B/dance, with a definitive freestyle sound to it. Unfortunately there's no vid for the tune, but you can here it right here...

Best of 2016 Song of the Day - Make Me - Britney Spears, feat. G-Eazy
The year 2016 saw several big name returns to the music scene, including one Britney Spears. Returning to the more dancier, polished side of things compared to her 2013 Britney Jean record, the new Glory album is chock full of dance stuff more reminiscent of the great Femme Fatale album. This jam, the record's debut single, is less of a dancey track and more of a mid-tempo, but splendid tune. Check out Make Me...

Best of 2016 Song of the Day - Gold - Kiiara
I remember hearing this song in the car with my pal Eddie over the summer and I was jamming out while he was saying..I don't get it! I don't have any idea what the hell she's saying! Lol, I got that. I really don't either, but to me it doesn't matter. This song is so unique and fast and funky and cool that I don't really have to know what she's saying for me to like it.
Young Kiiara is just 21 years old and she just put out her debut album, Low Kii Savage, on Atlantic Records in March. This, the debut single, reached all the way to the #13 spot. Not bad, huh? Anyway, here are the lyrics that probably confuse you when you're listening...
Roof is falling let me love me falling I just know [3x]
Roof is falling let me love me
Now, check out the intoxicating Gold...

Best of 2016 Song of the Day - One Dance - Drake, feat. Kyla & WizKid
It's the last month of the year, and it's time to start reflecting on the best music of 2016. Though it wasn't the greatest year on record for music, it did have its moments, like this one from Drake, which was, and still is, a groovalicious and infectious jam. Check out One Dance...

Song of the Day - Holy War - Alicia Keys
If war is holy and sex is obscene
We've got it twisted in this lucid dream
Baptized in boundaries, schooled in sin
Divided by difference, sexuality and skin
I've been wanting to post this tune for awhile now...so appropriate for this time we're all living in. That's why I love music so much. It has a way of giving us truth in such a way that seems to carry a different mode of meaning than, say, just words on a paper. Please listen, really listen, to the beautiful Holy War...
Oh so we can hate each other and fear each other
We can build these walls between each other
Baby, blow by blow and brick by brick
Keep yourself locked in, yourself locked in
Yeah we can hate each other and fear each other
We can build these walls between each other
Baby, blow by blow and brick by brick
Keep yourself locked in, yourself locked
Oh maybe we should love somebody
Oh maybe we could care a little more
So maybe we should love somebody
Instead of polishing the bombs of holy war

Song of the Day - Breathing Underwater - Emeli Sandé
Something like flying
Hard to describe it
My God, I'm breathing underwater
Something like freedom, freedom
My God, I'm breathing underwater
I love inspirational music and Emeli Sandé has become a master at inspiration. In the midst of the early life of her second album, Long Live the Angels, Emeli seems to have fine-tuned herself and her sound, with a collection of fifteen new tunes that all seem a step above those found on her first record, Our Version of Events. Case in point, this four-minute nugget is inspiration at its best, with beautiful lyrics, an ethereal and gospel feel, and of course her heavenly voice. Check out Breathing Underwater...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - One Love - David Guetta, feat. Estelle
Here's a classic jam to get your weekend started. This one is the title track from David Guetta's 2009 gem of a record and features British songstress Estelle on vocals. This one epitomizes the type of quality dance music that characterized the album and spawned a sound that would last for at least a few years on. Check out One Love...

Song of the Day - I Lived - One Republic
Today is my birthday. I wasn't exactly sure how to approach it this year, at least on here. I haven't been in a good place lately so I don't really feel too much like celebrating. I thought about not posting at all today, but I just can't seem to skip a day. So once I decided to go ahead and post, I set off to find a song to fit my life the way I feel today.
I don't feel like I've been living a lot lately. Too many things on my plate these days and literally very little time to sit back and enjoy life even if it's just in bits and pieces. No, no time for anything but work and driving and more work...at school and at home. And even when I do find some time to myself, like after my class last night, I was simply too tired and went to sleep early...something that seems to happen often lately.
So my song choice is meant to remind me that I have lived life, just not lately, and I will have the chance to live it again sometime in the near future. This craziness of life has just got me feeling stuck, that's all. Anyway, happy birthday to me! Enjoy the song...

Song of the Day - The Days - Avicii, feat. Robbie Williams
I almost forgot about superstar Swedish deejay/producer Avicii until I was looking for something different to listen to yesterday and I came across his playlist. It's been a long time since we've heard anything significant from him, so here's a gem from his 2014 The Days/Nights EP featuring British crooner Robbie Williams. Great tune!

Song of the Day - Same Ol' Mistakes - Rihanna
Here's a very chill song off of Rihanna's latest, Anti. I tell ya, I haven't really loved the album too much since its release, but a few of the songs have grown on me, like this one. The tune is pretty complex and melancholy and perfect for some background music whilst having guests...one of those songs that'll unexpectedly work its way into your brain. Check out Same Ol' Mistakes...

Song of the Day - The Greatest - Sia
Sia's latest has been out now for a couple of months already and has steadily grown on me. The tune is typical Sia, well written and catchy and full of meaning. The song was reportedly penned for the victims of the Orlando shooting back in June and yeah, the opening to the video showing the tag #WEAREYOURCHILDREN suggests that perhaps this is true. My love for Sia grows even more! Here's The Greatest...

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Sunshine Day - The Brady Bunch
For those of you who haven't heard the news yet, Florence Henderson, once America's favorite T.V. mom, passed away yesterday at the age of 82. For those of you out there who are my age, Florence and her clan of Bradys were an inimitable part of our young lives, and we are sad at the news. Here's a little sunshiney flashback from those Brady kids in honor of their mom...Rest in Peace Florence!

A Thanksgiving Song of the Day - Kind and Generous - Natalie Merchant
For all of the problems we may have in our lives, there are always just as many blessings. Sometimes all you have to do to forget those problems is stop and think about all that you do have, even if just for awhile. That's what Thanksgiving is all about, and that's why it's my favorite holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to everybody!

A Thanksgiving Song of the Day - Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
It's Thanksgiving week and although I have been super super busy these past couple of months, I need to stop and take some time to acknowledge my favorite holiday and what it means. Thanksgiving is waaayyy better than Christmas! No shopping for presents, no pressure, a little less cold, lol...all ya gotta do is say thanks! Here's a classic by the inimitable Cyndi Lauper, and if she was singing this to me, I would totally feel the warmth of appreciation in my heart! Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Stay - Kygo, feat. Maty Noyes
Thought I could leave you cause I felt my heart numbing
It hits so deep, I closed my eyes and I just took off running
I turned around and saw the look on your face
So I stayed, stayed
Here's a particular favorite of mine from Norwegian deejay/producer Kygo. The song's got a melancholy, yet dance vibe to it, and Maty Nobes' voice carries the lyrics oh so tenderly. Check out Stay...

Song of the Day - Clumsy - Britney Spears
I swear I didn't know this before I decided on this tune for Song of the Day, but as I searched for a decent audio version of it I discovered that just a day ago it was announced that Clumsy would be the newest single off of Britney Spears' newest album Glory. I was actually listening to the album in the car last night and decided that this was one of the better songs on the album, very clubby and very Britney. So there! (Pats himself on back!) Check out Clumsy...

Song of the Day - Express Myself - Ricky Reed
You may not know who Ricky Reed is, but hopefully you soon will. He is pretty darned famous for his talents as a producer, having worked on a string of hit songs like Jason Derulo's Talk Dirty (to Me), Jessie J's Burnin' Up, Pitbull's Fireball, and a host of others. Well, Ricky's got a brand new single as a frontman, so to speak, and it is simply an awesome tune. Classically catchy, this one will definitely keep you singing long after a listen. The version here is a bit different than the one I found on iTunes, but it's still great. Check out Express Myself...
