New Music Fridays, June 29th, 2018 - A Nice Variety of New Music

This has been an oddly good week in new music, though at first listen, I wasn't crazy about any of the tunes spotlighted here.  The ones I chose are varied in genre, but all pretty damned good, so check out this week's offerings...

Don't Matter to Me - Drake, Michael Jackson

Undoubtedly the biggest new music story of the week was the dropping of Drake's brand new double album, Scorpion.  Not a huge Drake fan here, but there are definitely some tunes in his catalog that I do love, and they all tend to be more on the R&B side, like this whopper of a surprise.  Apparently, the Canadian rapper/singer delved into some of Michael Jackson's later work and used the King of Pop's vocals withing the overall construction of this song.  Pitchfork has an incredibly amazing piece on this.  Check out a sound-clip of Don't Matter to Me...

Lovers - LoKii, REMMI

Here's a sweet, catchy tune by dance artists LoKii and REMMI.  Check out Lovers...

Bad Love - Sean Paul, Ellie Goulding

It's been a long time since we've heard anything from Ellie Goulding, but now she's back with a funky new reggae-tinged dance track featuring none other than Sean Paul.  Check out Bad Love...

Everybody Needs a Kiss - Benny Benassi, Sofi Tukker

Here's a brand new collaboration between Italian producer Benny Benassi and the hot hot Sofi Tukker.  This one, like virtually anything ST touches, is golden.  Check out Everybody Needs a Kiss...

Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You - Sheryl Crow, Annie Clark

Wow!  I haven't paid virtually any attention to Sheryl Crow in years, but this new collaboration with fellow female guitarist extraordinaire Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, is wicked good!  The song is a political rant against climate change deniers and you've just got to hear it.  Here's Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You...

I think I'm going to skip any honorable mentions this week.  Nothing really particularly stands out to not here, but you can always check out the New Music Fridays playlist on Spotify.

Song of the Day - First Time - Kygo, feat. Ellie Goulding

Image result for first time kygo

Norwegian deejay/producer Kygo is on fire lately.  Quick on the heels of his current top ten hit, It Ain't Me, with Selena Gomez comes a brand new lovely tune with British songstress Ellie Goulding.  Love this one!  Check it out...

Song of the Day - Powerful - Major Lazer, feat. Ellie Goulding & Tarrus Riley

It never ceases to amaze me how much good music comes and goes without notice.  Corporations and radio stations...ugh!  Instead of getting to know some of the great stuff out there that undeservedly fades into obscurity without getting a chance to shine, we are consistently treated to the same songs over and over and over until we trulu get sick of them (see Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop the Feeling, Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, etc., etc., etc.).

Well there is a lot of great stuff out there that no one ever gets to hear and that is one of the reasons I run this blog.  Most people who know me know that I have good taste in music, and if I find something good enough to post here, then it is worth a listen.  Case in point, this wonderful duet between Ellie Goulding and a singer by the name of Tarrus Riley, from Major Lazer's third album Peace Is the Mission.  This is one of those tunes that I Shazamed in a mall last week and I became disappointed just now when I discovered it was released more than a year ago, in June of 2015.

This is one of those songs that I liked the first time I heard it, and hopefully you will too.  Ellie Goulding's raspy voice blends well with Riley's big pipes, especially on the ear-pleasing and memorable chorus. Check out Powerful...

Song of the Day - On My Mind - Ellie Goulding

Good morning and Happy Hump Day.  Here's the lead track off of Ellie Goulding's latest, and most stellar album, Delirium.  The song well represents the style of much of the record, which is full of catchy, dance oriented pop tunes.  Oh, and Ms. Goulding is looking mighty good in the video, too! Check out On My Mind...

Song of the Day - Something In the Way You Move - Ellie Goulding

The more I listen to Ellie Goulding's Delirium, the more I'm loving it!  It seems that after her successes with dance music producer Calvin Harris, the British songstress has really embraced the genre.  The album is high on fun, dancey tunes and the ballads, which were in much higher abundance on previous efforts, have diminished (though the slow ones here are really good, too!). Here's a favorite that's as happy as it is dancey.  Check out Something In the Way You Move...

Song of the Day - On My Mind - Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding is back!  Though never quite holding the title of a superstar, Ellie has managed to maintain a presence in the music industry.  Between hit singles both solo and on collaborations, she's hit the charts on a number of occasions, though you rarely ever hear, aw, when is Ellie Goulding going to put out new music.  Well, that may change after this very promising lead single to her new Delirium set.  This is the kind of tune you can enjoy the very first time you hear it, so if you haven't yet, check it out...

Song of the Day - Love Me Like You Do - Ellie Goulding

Here's a brand new ballad from Ellie Goulding off the upcoming soundtrack to the highly anticipated 50 Shades of Grey film.   The song is as sultry and erotic as the themes of the film, and Goulding's voice lends itself perfectly to the sexually charged lyrics:

Fading in, fading out
On the edge of paradise
Every inch of your skin is a holy gray I've got to find
Only you can set my heart on fire, on fire
Yeah, I'll let you set the pace
Cause I'm not thinking straight
My head spinning around I can't see clear no more
What are you waiting for?

I'd say that even though I've got no desire to see the film, I do like the tune and highly recommend you check it out yourself...
