Unoriginal, Narcissistic, Low Life Nicki

I thought I was watching the Jerry Springer Show!  In case you haven't seen it, Nicki Minaj got all Springer at the VMA's last night after accepting an award for Best Hip-Hop Video, calling out host Miley Cyrus for supposedly trashing her in the press.

And now, back to this b**ch who had a lot
to say about me in the press the other day.
Miley, what's good?

The reference that she made happened during an interview Miley had done in which she was asked about Nicki's complaint that she was snubbed for Video of the Year, saying that "if your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year...Black women influence pop culture so much, but are rarely rewarded for it."

Cyrus alluded in the interview that the complaint was more about herself than at the bigger issue at hand.  "I don't respect your statement because of the anger that came with it...You made it about you. Not to sound like a bitch, but that's like, 'Eh, I didn't get my VMA."

Well to me, the whole thing just embodies what is wrong with the music industry and society in general, and I won't be buying any more Nicki Minaj songs anytime soon.  First of all, the amount of narcissism that exists today...freaking ego!!!  I'm sorry Ms. Nicki, but Miley was right in her response.  Referring to the Artist to Watch Award, which Cyrus lost in 2008, she shot back, "Whatever.  Because it's no big deal!  It's just an award, and I persevered!"  Really!

Aren't pop stars supposed to be role models?  This is what our kids have to look up to?  The head wagging and calling someone out live, on stage.  And all because she said something negative about you.  Boo hoo!  Suck it up Nicki.  You wanna be in the spotlight, and carry duffle bags every time you go to SunTrust, you gotta be able to deal with compliment and criticism.  You wanna change how people look at black women?  Don't portray the very embodiment of what people ignorant people think about them.

And as for the music...I'm sorry, but Anaconda is not your best work by far.  In fact, it;s like a lot of other stuff out there in the entertainment industry nowadays: unoriginal!  That song is just Sir Mix-a-Lot copied, with a couple of Oh My God! Look at her butt's.  Really?  Again, as a woman, you're portraying yourself way differently than you want to be treated.  And you're a freaking millionaire, too!  God, there is no justice in the world, when someone like you with a modicum of talent gets to walk around living it all easy breezy objectifying women using an unoriginal song and then wanting to be rewarded for it.  Ugh, if there's any justice in the world, karma will bring you back as a much lower form of life the next time around...

Oh, and you can check out the exchange on Rolling Stone.

Summer Jams Song of the Day - What Do You Mean? - Justin Bieber

I have to say that slowly, at least in the past couple of months, I'm becoming a, gulp, Belieber.  That's right, I said it.  I am actually starting to like Justin Bieber...just a little, but still.  Though I haven't seen the VMA's yet (to me they are no longer relevant to my world anyway), last night's show saw two performances by him, one of which is this, his latest project for which he released this video for not long after the show had ended.

Clearly, Bieber is no longer a child prodigy, he is now a bona fide adult, both thematically and musically.  I'll let you judge the former for yourself by watching the steamy video below, in which the self-anointed senior gets quite steamy with model Xenia Deli, Calvins and all, but for me, as always, it is the music.  It all started with Bieber's vocal appearance on the Skrillex - Diplo collaboration Where Are You Now?

When I first heard that one, I'll admit that I did take note of the rhythm and bluesish vocals without knowing it was he that was singing, and I loved it.  What Do You Mean? seems to take up where that one left off, with a soothing, almost island-jammish, melody and the same kind of soft, tender vocals that appear in the other tune.  Pretty catchy, too.  So if you haven't seen it yet, click play below and check out What Do You Mean?

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You - Terri DeSario

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I haven't been able to get to John's World until now, but I think I may have found the perfect song for a easy breezy disco Sunday night.  Here's a little known, but smooth and catchy tune from 1978.  Here's Terri DeSario and Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Blind Heart - Cazzette, featuring Terri B

You've got my strung up like a puppet
Hung up on a thin red line
You've got me caught up in your loving
Stuck here in my love sick mind

And I've been trying, to pick myself up off the floor
And I'd be lying, saying I don't want you anymore
You've got my blind heart holding on to you...

Today's Song of the Day is one of my favorite house jams from recent years.  It's features great vocals by Terri B and a slammin' funky beat...

Flashback Friday Summer Jams Song of the Day - Boom Boom Boom - Paul Lekakis

Now here's a real flashback for ya...if anyone was of club-going-age back in 1986, then you'll certainly remember this one.  It was by one hit wonder Paul Lekakis and it had the two main ingredients that made an 80's club hit: heavy synth beats and sexual innuendo.  God, at the time I so love love loved this one...

Six Flags Break

Hey folks, gone to Six Flags for the day, Wednesday, August 26th.  Be back on Thursday with another great new Song of the Day!

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Am I Wrong - Nico & Vinz

Am I wrong
For thinking out the box from where I stay?
Am I wrong
For saying that I choose another way?
I ain't trying to do what everybody else doin'
Just cause everybody doin' what they all do
If one thing I know, I'll fall but I'll grow
I'm walking down this road of mine,
This road that I call home

Ooh, those lyrics are soooo me!  Great summer jam...enjoy...

Sumer Jams Song of the Day - We Are One - DJ Assad & Greg Parys

I am there for you
You there for me
That's how it is when we believe that
We're the ones that we belong to

There are two very good versions of today's song, so good that I started to put one of them up, but then decided on the other.  Talk about a tough decision, but I ultimately chose the dancier version because I thought it would fit better as a "summer jam" (though really the chill version would work great too!).

Anywho, this song's got these catchy whistle and sax rhythms to it, and the lyrics and the vocals are just awesome, as well...and then you get to the video.  The video to this version (yes, even the videos are a little different in the two versions), looks like one of those standard quick shots of different people singing and dancing to the song that we can see in any number of videos out there, only you don't know any of them.  Heck, I'm not sure which one is DJ Assad, but I'm sure he's there.

Anyway, this video is fun to watch because the people genuinely seem to be having a good time and that, coupled with the awesome tune, makes for a very pleasant three minutes or so.  Check out We Are One, the dancier version...

John's Music World Rewind - Robyn's "Body Talk"

Since I've posted Robyn songs for the past two days, I figured I'd delve back into my days at Associated Content/Yahoo Voices to share something I'd written on the Body Talk series I spoke of in the two posts.  Since it no longer appears anywhere else on the net, at least now it back out there and it just may spark some interest in someone looking for great new music to get a hold of...

“Body Talk Trilogy a Pop Landmark” – Chicago Tribune

 “Infectious” – Palm Beach Post

“A perfect pop specimen” – Slant Magazine

November 15, 2010

Critics everywhere are praising the triumphant return of Swedish pop singer Robyn to the American musical landscape.  She’s been named one of the “most under-appreciated musicians of 2010” by Entertainment Weekly’s Simon Vozick-Levinson, and I couldn’t agree more.  Last August, I previewed the upcoming release of the singer’s “Body Talk, Part 2” (see New Music Releases for September), the second in a trilogy of EP’s to be released this year.  The two “Body Talk” albums released to date have produced several wonderful tracks and the upcoming release of “Body Talk, Part 3” is sure to continue the trend.

After writing that piece back in August, I decided to give “Body Talk, Part 1” a try.  I downloaded the album from iTunes and took a listen.  I had remembered the singer from her hits back in the nineties (“Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What it Takes)”) and so I figured the album might be a good addition to my catalog.  I quickly learned the songs, all of which were easily remembered for their clever lyrics and wonderfully pop/dance sound.

“From the beginning, I always thought pop and substance were not mutually exclusive,” the singer recently said in an interview before embarking on her current tour of the States.  “I grew up with parents who were doing experimental theater, so I gravitated toward artistic expression, pop music on a weird, arty tip, but mixed with club culture, lounge music, dance beats.”  That’s exactly what you get when you listen to Robyn.

The songs from the “Body Talk” series thus far are well written and pleasing to the ears.  The series starts off with the electronic and hypnotic “Don’t F*****g Tell Me What to Do” and the quirky, yet catchy “Fembot.”  My personal favorite from “Body Talk, Part 1” is the vulnerable and infectious “Dancing on My Own.”  Other standouts include “Love Kills”, “Cry When You Get Older”, and the fearless, string-accompanied “Indestructible.”  “Hang With Me” works much better with its synth-pop makeover on “Part 2” (the song appears on “Body Talk, Part 1” as an acoustic, melancholy tune) and “U Should Know Better” is a fun and frenzied collaboration with rapper and friend Snoop Dog.

The third and final issue in the “Body Talk” series is set to be released on November 22nd and word is out that there will be five brand new tracks on this set, including “Call Your Girlfriend”, “Stars 4-Ever” and the Max Martin produced “Time Machine.”   The lead single from “Body Talk, Part 3” is an electronic reworking of the ballad “Indestructible.”

Will you tell me once again
How we're gonna be just friends
If you're for real and not pretend
Then I guess you can just hang with me

...And if you do me right
I'm gonna do right by you
And if you treat me right
I'm gonna confide in you
I know what's on your mind
There will be time for that too
If you hang with me...

The singer has been performing her collection of “Body Talk” gems to wildly appreciative audiences around the US and Canada this fall and will continue on through the winter and early spring with various tour dates in Europe and a just announced show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on February 5th. The singer explains the popularity of her shows: "It's very simple," she says. "There's no pyro or big explosions. It's just about the energy on stage and the energy that happens between us and the audience. "It's about the music really," she says. "We're just trying to make people dance." And that’s exactly what Robyn does…

Somebody said you got a new friend
Guess she loves you better than I can
There's a big black sky over my town
I know where you're at, I bet she's around

Yeah I know it's stupid
But I just gotta see it for myself

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, ohh
I'm right over here, why can't you see me, ohh
I'm giving it all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home
Ooh ooh, I'm just dancing on my own

Pick up Robyn's Body Talk right here...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Love Is Free - Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique

After posting an older Robyn tune from 2008 in yesterday's Song of the Day post, I kind of felt guilty failing to mention that she's got a brand new project out, a collaborative EP with a trio calling itself La Bagatelle Magique.   The new project, Love Is Free, is a five song mini-album whose title matches the name of its debut single.  I haven't posted it earlier because the song is not the same kind of pop that we're used to from Robyn.  Though her music has always been dance-oriented, this one comes a lot closer to a house jam than she's ever really gone before.  The tune is fast and frenzied and very heavy on bass and drum.  Robyn's vocals don't make an appearance until about a minute into the jam, and that's exactly where the song gets hot for me...

Imma give it to you baby
Imma give it when I'm ready
Some loose some steady
Some light some heavy
I't all over this city....

Check out Love Is Free...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Handle Me - Robyn

Let me tell you how it be
You won't get with this you see
Cause you can't handle me

Over the past five years I've become such a fan of Robyn.  It all started with the critically acclaimed Body Talk set of three EP's she put out in 2010.  Oh, so many great tunes can be found on those! Once I'd exhausted the Hang With Me's and the Indestructible's, Call Your Girlfriend's, Dancing On My Own, etc., I became impatient in waiting for her to put something new out, so I delved a little bit into her past and found a whole new set of great jams to dig.

Most Robyn fans are hardcore like me, and virtually every one of her songs is a precious gem to be savored and enjoyed with every beat and every word.  I remember an early and favorable review of the Body Talk series that said that her songs put a whole new dimension on what we know as pop music, and that is that the songs are intelligently written and meaningful, a statement with which I agree wholeheartedly.  Unfortunately, not enough people know a lot of her stuff, and so even though I knew I wanted to post a Robyn song, I had a really hard time deciding upon one to post.  She does have a couple of newer things going on (stay tuned for that!), but I want to share the older Robyn that I've come to love so much.

Handle Me is one of those earlier gems that came in between her 90's successes (Do You Know What It Takes and Show Me Love) and Body Talk. and I never would have found it had I not been eager for new Robyn music.  The song, like many of hers, is catchy and intelligent for a pop song, and the video shows the eclectic side of the singer that perhaps contributes the fact that she doesn't get a whole lot of attention in the mainstream.  I love it, though, and I urge you to give it a try.  You just might find a whole lotta new stuff to listen to...

Flashback Friday Summer Jams Song of the Day - Burning Up - Madonna

Don't put me off,, cause I'm on fire
And I can't quench my desire
Don't you know that
I'm burning up for your love
You're not convinced that that is enough

I put myself in this position
And I deserve the imposition
But you don't even know, I'm alive
And it's pounding in my heart, just won't die
I'm burning up...

Oh yeah, with Madonna's birthday that just passed, the upcoming opening of the Rebel Heart Tour, and the newest Madonnathon happening at Rockbar in NYC, there's no time like the present for a trip down Madonna memory lane with the "B" side of her second ever single, Physical Attraction.  The year was 1983 and Madonna's first single, Everybody, was so popular that people were already hankering for more from this mysterious new dance music sensation, and she gave us not one, but two new tunes.

The version that appeared on the "B" side of this record was more dance-oriented than the album version, which had a much rougher, more rockish sound, with guitar riffs backing up the vocals. Alas, the album version is the one which made it in the video, but I always preferred the dancier version myself.  Ah well, the song never became a huge, mainstream hit, but most Madonna fans know it well...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Turn Me On - David Guetta, featuring Nicki Minaj

After a little blip in missing yesterday's Song of the Day, we're back with a hot one off of David Guetta's monumental 2011 Nothing But the Beat album.  This was one of the biggest hits off that set, hitting the peak position on Billboard's Dance Chart and #2 on the magazine's Hot 100.  Nicki Minaj's voice works well in the dance music genre, and she and Mr. Guetta are still making beautiful music together with the current jam Hey Mama.  In the meantime, here's Turn Me On...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Dirty Talk - Paulette (Dr. Pack Edit)

I am no angel...
I like it when you do that stuff to me
I am no angel
I like it when you talk talk
Dirty when you talk talk

Today's jam was a tough one to find, for there are two versions of the same song out there, one with David Guetta protegé Wynter Gordon, and this, the other one by an obscure artist named Paulette. The two songs are virtually identical, except for the voices singing the lyrics, and though I have been a fan of Ms. Gordon and other things she's done, this is the Dirty Talk I know and love.  So catchy...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Stereo Love - Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina

Well Madonna Week is officially over and we're starting to wind down from those lazy hazy summer days and heading towards...ugh...September!  Aw, but there's still some summer left, no?  Here's a smooth summer beach jam that was sooooo popular a couple of years back.  Enjoy!

Madonna Week Song of the Day #2 - Like a Prayer

Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home...

When you call my name
It's like a little prayer
Down on my knees
I wanna take you there

Since it is Madonna's birthday, I just HAD to post a second Song for the Day.  It's my own personal favorite, the awesomely uplifting, Like a Prayer...

Madonna Week Song of the Day #1 - Express Yourself

Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know you know
You've got to
Make him express how he feels
And baby then you'll know your love is real

We celebrate Madonna's birthday today with the first of two Songs of the Day, the classic opener to the Blond Ambition Tour that set the bar for everyone else to follow.  Here's Express Yourself...

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Turn Up the Radio

Good morning and Happy Saturday!  As Madonna Week winds down here on John's Music World, I'm having a harder and harder time choosing songs I want to feature because there is just so many to choose from.  Who knows?  Since it is the weekend you may see an extra Song of the Day post from me...we shall see!  In the meantime, here's a tune from M.D.N.A. that should have been a big hit, and if it weren't for ageist decision-makers out there in the music industry today, perhaps it would have been.  Great song...

Rolling Stone Names Madonna One of the Top 100 Songwriters of All Time

Traveling down, this road
Watching the signs as I go
I think I'll follow, the sun
Isn't everyone just

Traveling down, their own road
Watching the signs as they go
I think I'll follow, my heart
It's a very good place to start

Madonna didn't become the iconic superstar she is by chance.  No, there are plenty of reasons why she stands where she does today.  Of course, she's been a notorious provocateur over the years, which is unfortunately what many people think of when they think of Madonna, but that's just a small part of who she is and has been.  That's the part that yes, perhaps got her a lot more attention than she might have gotten otherwise, but without talent she'd be nowhere today.

Music, makes the people, come together...

Just recently Rolling Stone Magazine published its list for the best songwriters of all time, and Madonna has landed at #56.  Now, what I've already known for years and years is finally official!

From those earliest days in New York, when she broke out with Everybody in the early eighties, Madonna's music had that extra something that made people pay attention, whether it was the dancey music track, the lyrics, the persona, or all of them put together in one package.  I remember a family road trip to New Jersey once where I'd forced my dad to play Madonna's first album from start to finish in the van, telling everyone that she was going to be big, and although people naturally don't like to hear music they don't know in such a situation, they all enjoyed it.

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

Lyrics are oftentimes the most important ingredient in a song, and throughout the years, Madonna has had so much success in large part due to her lyrics.  They've reflected her own life at the time and almost always struck major chords with her fans, including me.  I won't say that I know every Madonna lyric she ever wrote, but there's definitely a huge file in my brain somewhere that contains her many, many lyrics.

When the world starts to get you down
And nothing seems to go your way
And the noise of the maddening crowd
Makes you feel like you're going to go insane

And for those out there (and I know there are plenty of you!) who say that "Oh, I don't like her new stuff. It's just not as good," take a look at these lyrics. They're from a song off of Rebel Heart called Wash All Over Me, and I posted these words on Facebook a couple of weeks ago, without commentary or reference to Madonna...
In a world that's changing
I'm a stranger, in a strange land
There's a contradiction
And I'm stuck here in between

Life is like a desert,
An oasis, to confuse me
So I walk this razor's edge
Will I stand or will I fall

Through a blind eye
I try to pretend that
Nothing is what it seems
Torn between the impulse to stay
Or running away from all this madness

Who am I
To decide what should be done
If this is, the end, then let it come

Let it come, let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it roll
Let it wash all over me
Over me...let it wash all over me

Some of my friends actually thought I wrote it. "Amazing!," one of them said. Yup, that's Madge! Now check out the tune...

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Open Your Heart

I see you on the street as you walk on by
You make me want to hang my head down and cry

Here's a Flashback Friday all the way from 1986 and Madonna's third studio album, True Blue. Open Your Heart was the most enduring track off of that record and stands today among my all time favorite Madonna songs.  She most recently incorporated it into a live performance during her 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show appearance, working it as a spiritual intro to Like a Prayer with the help of the soulful voice of Cee Lo Green.  Man, that was good!  Anyway, enjoy your Friday and enjoy Open Your Heart...

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Get Together

Do you believe in love at first sight
It's an illusion, I don't care
Picture it...It's 1979, late on a Saturday night at Danceteria.  Strobe lights flicker throughout the immense nightclub as the dance floor moves in unison to the rhythms vibrating throughout the space. There's electricity in the air as lovers sway and gyrate to the smooth sounds.  Magic!

This was pretty much the inspiration for Madonna's classic Confessions on a Dance Floor album, in which a continuous mix of disco beats and rhythms melded together to form one long, 70's disco dance party.  This was one of those moments in her career where she took everything in a completely new direction and did it as masterfully as if she'd been doing it for years.  It's one of the reasons I love Madonna so much.

*My friend Sonny did a masterful job performing this song the other night at karaoke and was what inspired me to post this here today.  #proud

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Ray of Light

Quicker than a ray of light she's flying...

Happy Hump Day all!  Here's one of my favorite Madonna songs from one of my favorite Madonna albums, the high energy Ray of Light...

...and I feel
Like I just got home
and I feel...

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Dress You Up

You've got style
That's what all the girls say...

...Satin sheets, and luxury so fine
All your suits are custom made in London

Well I've got something that you really like...

The year was 1985 and Madonna had just embarked on her very first tour, aptly titled The Virgin Tour.  It was one of only two Madonna concert tours I never saw (the other being The Girlie Show), and I was really bummed about missing this one.  Luckily this one was released as a full-length concert video and so I got to see the whole thing on let's just say more than a few occasions.  This tune, off the Like a Virgin album, opened the show and so it was our first glimpse ever of Madge in full concert action.  Quite primitive in comparison to what was to follow, but back then it was that first style of irresistible dance music that we all cared or even knew about...and it was awesome!

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Living For Love

Took me to Heaven
Let me fall down
Now that it's over
I'm gonna carry on

Here's the very good first single from Rebel Heart.  The tune was Madge's 44th #1 song on Billboards Dance Songs Chart, a record tie-er for any artist on any chart  (She tied George Strait, but has since broken that record with her #45 chart-topper, Ghosttown.).  I've said this before, but this was a much better choice for the opening single than she had for M.D.N.A.  (The cheer-leading Gimme All Your Luvin')  Turn Up the Radio, a similar type of high-energy dance tune, should have opened that album.  Anyway, love this...

Madonna Week Song of the Day - Bye Bye Baby (The Girlie Show)

We take a break from our regularly scheduled Summer Jams to bring you our annual Madonna Week. In honor of Madge's August 16th birthday, we will be bringing you some of the best from her immense catalog of classics old and new for the next eight days right up until her big day.  For any of you true blue Madonna fans out there, we're going to start with this classic from arguably her best album ever, 1992's Erotica.

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Just Fine - Mary J Blige

So I like what I see when I'm looking at me
When I'm walking past the mirror
No stress through the night
At a time in my life
Ain't worried bout if you feel it
Got my head on straight, I got my mind right
I ain't gonna let you kill it
See I won't change my life, my life's just
Fine fine fine fine....

Yeah!

Flashback Friday Summer Jams Song of the Day - C'mon Ride the Train - Quad City DJ's

Here's an oldie but goodie...one of those classic rap/dance songs that were so popular in the 90's.  It's a hot, frenzied dance jam I'd forgotten all about until I heard it on the radio the other day.  I knew then and there that it'd be my Flashback Friday Jam this week.  C'mon, it's the choo choo...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Get Lucky - Daft Punk

We're up all night to the sun
We're up all night to have fun
She's up all night for good fun
I'm up all night to get lucky...

Ah, modern day disco!  One of my all-time favorite tunes goes great with a sizzling summer night of...of...dancing!?!?!  And of course gettin' lucky!  Funky smooth grooves...

Summer Jams Song of the day - Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen

It was just about three years ago that we couldn't get enough of this song, but then it got played so much that we all quickly tired of it.  Yes, I'm talking about Carly Rae Jepsen's one hit wonder with the oh-so-catchy hook that probably set her for life anyway, the still fun and still irresistible Call Me Maybe. C'mon now....Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy.  So here's my number...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Hello - Martin Solveig & Dragonette

Here's a fun summer jam from back in 2010.  It' French superstar deejay/producer Martin Solveig with Canadian band Dragonetter in a frenzied tune that is one of the only songs out there I'd ever jump to rather than just dance.  It works!

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Yoga - Janelle Monae

Monday's are always a day for fresh starts and if any of you out there do yoga, today might be a great day to get some in.  Here's a funky little incentive for you from Janelle Monae...now, baby bend over...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Hung Up - Madonna

Time goes by, so slowly...

August is Madonna's birthday month and this will be the first of several Madonna Summer Jams to be featured in the coming weeks.  In fact, it is the first Madge song I've put up this summer, surprisingly. It's hard to believe that come this October, Hung Up will be celebrating its 10th anniversary, first being released in October of 2005.  It is clearly one of her greatest, cleverly employing the music track to ABBA's Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight), and turning it into her own.  It was the era of the Madonna Disco...Confessions on a Dance Floor...and it was hot!  Enjoy your Sunday...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Toxic - Britney Spears

Baby can't you see
I'm calling
A guy like you
Should wear a warning
It's dangerous
I'm falling....

Happy August everybody!  Yes, summer may be half over, but there's still plenty to come.  Here's a classic Britney jam to start off your Saturday.  Enjoy...
