I had a really hard time choosing a first Song of the Day for the New Year. I wanted, like I do so often, to make some meaning out of my choice relevant to the particular day, and this first day of 2017 just beckons for a meaningful choice. The year 2016 was a rough one for many of us, and I know there are plenty of people who are glad it's over, including me. Over the past month especially, there have been so many deaths both in the celebrity world and even in my own personal sphere that you can help but contemplate just how precious life is.
I've been thinking a lot abut life during this recent period and I've come to the conclusion that yeah, life is meant to be lived, and not simply to be going through the motions like many of us do, I am guilty of that myself most of the time. The concept of a bucket list, which first came to light in the movie of the same name, is a little morbid, perhaps, but it does speak to this idea of living life to its fullest. And so my choice of Nelly Furtado's song version of the concept is very appropriate for today, As we all make our resolutions to lose weight or quit smoking in the new year, I am going to make an effort to go through my bucket list more than ever in the coming 12 months. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy Nelly's song. Happy New Year!

I love everything about Nelly Furtado's 2003 sophomore album Folklore, especially this little ditty, which I've always taken inspiration from whenever I feel the need to make my voice heard. Remember, no one is Powerless, and if you've got something to say, say what you want...as long as it's with civility.
Here's a song I somehow missed, but thanks to my pal Sonny, a fellow Nelly Furtado fan, I've now discovered an eight year-old gem. It's hard to believe it's been three years since Nelly Furtado has put anything out there. It was September 2012 when her last album, The Spirit Indestructible, was released and since then...nothing. Well I certainly hope that changes soon, but in the meantime here's the title cut from that album, and uplifting and inspirational jam that's among my all time favorites. Enjoy and Happy Sunday!
Honestly, sometimes I have no idea how the music industry works...
Ever since Missy Elliot's nice guest spot at Katy Perry's Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, I've been wanting to post one of Missy's videos, and I knew exactly the one I wanted to post, this remix of Get Ur Freak On featuring a very young Nelly Furtado. I vividly remember being wowed by this version of the smash hit single off her 2001 Miss E...So Addictive album. At the time, Nelly Furtado was brand spanking new and her vocals on this track were slamming and added a whole new dimension to the song.
I remember a video, different from the original Furtado-less version. It took place on a city street at night, and like many of Missy's videos, featured a lot of stuff going on, including young Nelly doing her thing. After a long fruitless search for that video, I had to be satisfied, unfortunately, with this audio-only version. Now, I do own the MP3 of the song, but even that took me a long time to find, and the apparent disappearance of the video from the Internet leaves me scratching my head. I'm sure it's some sort of legal issue, of course, which is so frustrating because I am sure many more people would click play if they had the visual to go with the audio.
