In honor of Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of Whitney Houston, who sadly passed away this week at the age of 22, we post one of her mom's greatest and most beloved hits. I can never say for sure, but ever since the death of Whitney a couple of years back, her songs have skyrocketed in popularity and dance floors always fill up when this one is played. Well, it was a great song! Rest in Peace Bobbi Kristina!
Props to my pal Kristen for turning me on to this dude. The Weeknd is a recording pseudonym for Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Abel Tesfaye, and he's about to release his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness on August 28th. Can't Feel My Face, the lead single form the record, is an amalgmation of all that Tesfaye is, great lyrics set to a lil bit of R&B and lots and lots of funk. Ooh this one is hot, so hot that you should definitely check it out. That is, if you don't know it already...
Wake up in the morning feeling like P.Diddy Got my glasses, out the door, I'm gonna hit this city Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack Cause when I leave for the night I ain't coming back...
Who can forget this classic debut single from talented temptress Ke$ha? TiK ToK was the lead in to her first album, 2009's Animal, and it is a classic summer jam. Click play...
At first listen, you'd think this song was down and out R&B, but eventually you ease into the island rhythms and dancey beats and realize it's so much more than that. This Skrillex/Diplo/Bieber collaboration is actually a marvelous concoction of several different genres of music, and is pretty hot right now, too. Take a listen...
Here's one of my all time favorite dance songs, a fun one to start your week. Now just click play, throw your hands in the air, and say ay-oh, baby let's go...
Yah, you never said a word You didn't send me no letter Don't think I could forgive you? See, our world is slowly dying I'm not wasting no more time Don't think I could believe you
Here's a jam that just gets me to the core. I like to say that Robin Shulze's remix of Prayer in C was an early discovery for me, as I first posted it a long, long time ago. The song has got this steady, mesmerizing music track and Lilly Woods' raspy voice combined with those lyrics...woof! Awesome song! I actually heard if for the very first time at a club last night at Cherry's in Fire island and boy was I loving it. I'm so glad it's caught on because it deserves to...
On Friday, Janet Jackson completed the first part of her much talked about comeback with the video for the new album's debut single, No Sleep. Like the song, the video is nothing special, and very reminiscent of her classic That's the Way (Love Goes), Not to say that I hate it...on the contrary, the song is starting to grow on me, and the video is pleasing enough. The tune's got that classic Janet, head-bopping groove that we've all come to know and love, and the video is great if you like looking at Ms. Janet's beautiful face flitting around a very cool apartment. But that's about it, except for an appearance by J. Cole, who ads a little rap interlude into the groovy mix. To me, however, this is all nothing new, and I would think that a big comeback such as this one should herald in something fresh. What do you think? I'll let you decide for yourself...
All summer long, I've been featuring hot summer jams from years past and it's about time I posted something from the summer of 2015. Here's a jam that is very hot right at this moment. It's a chill-y, dancey tune that had everybody jamming last night at the Ritz in NYC, and if you click play, you'll be jamming too...
Nobody knows what I'm feeling inside I find it so stupid so why should I hide That I, love to make love to you baby
Back in 2012, the dynamic duo of Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull reunited in the studio to make this summer jam for J-Lo's Greatest Hits set with the same name. The song is pure perfection, with pleasant, singable verses set to a melodic beat and the big chorus, which is just as sweet and danceable. Click play below and then go out and dance...again!
Whoah, it's been a long time! I thought I'd post a little Throwback Thursday into this summer jams mix and throw in a little ditty I did once upon a time. The year was 2012, and P!nk's The Truth About Love album had just come out. Out of all the wonderful songs on that record, this one really tickled my fancy and for whatever reason, I had a burning desire to lip sync it on video. When I first posted it, it got a lot of rave reviews from friends...now it's just a fond memory. So, press play to check out my very own video debut, doing P!nk's wonderful True Love. Enjoy...
Since the Black Eyed Peas have a new tune out this week and today is Hump Day, we pay homage to both the band and the day with this classic ode to lovely lady lumps. Enjoy!
Here's a summer jam from 2009...nothing but a mindless, fun dance anthem! (God, I feel like a radio deejay sometimes!) Enjoy and have a great Tuesday....
It's hard to believe it, but the Black Eyed Peas have been around for twenty years now, and to celebrate the occasion the band, sans Fergie, have come out of hiatus to put out an all new tune and accompanying video. The song is called Back to Yesterday and it has all of the elements we've come to know and love from the Peas, featuring samples galore, electronica, and lots and lots of funk. If you're a Black Eyed Peas' fan, then check this out...
I would put today's Song of the Day in the same category as one I put up the other day. Like LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem, the dance anthem Gangnam Style, by Korean singer Psy came out of nowhere to become a worldwide phenomenon. The Korean-language tune, accompanied by a quite amusing video, transcended all language barriers to hit it big around the globe. Oh, and that dance...weird, but fun! If anyone didn't know what K-Pop was before, they most certainly did by the summer of 2012. So, like that LMFAO jam the other day, I urge you to click play below, party a lil to get your Monday going, and go on to have a marvelous day...
Today's summer jam is a special one dedicated to two very special people, my friends Eric and Rick. The two of them will be getting married this September and yesterday was the official beginning of the festivities: their bachelor party. Now I've been to several unique bachelor parties, but this one was definitely the most unique and the most fun, and I will be sharing all about that later on John's World. For now, since marriage is on the mind, here's a special video I haven't posted here in awhile. It got a lot of attention a couple of years back when it was posted on YouTube because of its uniqueness and the heartwarming love of two people and their families...kind of reminds me of my two friends in the picture above. Love you guys!
Today's song is not necessarily a summer dance jam, but it is totally a feel-good summer twilight kinda thing. The song has a chill, housey sort of vibe and it is perfect for the season...
Good morning and a Happy Beautiful Friday to you all. Here's one of my favorite songs of all time to get your weekend started on a high note, the hypnotic, melancholic and oh so dancey classic from Rihanna with super dance music producer/artist Calvin Harris. Enjoy!
Tonight I won't be takin' calls Cause I'll be dancing...
Oh it's been a long, long time for Lady Gaga to make an appearance on this blog. This hiatus from the dance/pop music scene has been somewhat...um...unusual, and I've been missing her, especially the old Gaga that appears in this one. Anyway, both the song and the video are extremely entertaining, and perfect for a summer dance party... Happy Thursday!
It's hard to believe it's been four years since this one had everybody shuffling and putting their hands up to the sun. Though LMFAO's first of two monster singles (the other was, of course, Sexy and I Know It) was released in January of 2011, it most certainly was a summer jam. I had forgotten all about this gem until it popped on my playlist in the car the other day. Had me jumpin' in mah seat, lol. Anyway, click play and relive a fun one...
Good morning and Happy Monday. After missing a few days of Song of the Day posts (I was away and had terrible connectivity issues!), we are back. One of the only things that keep me going on those long road trips is music, and I spent a good portion of my trp listening to a folder in my iTunes that I call my All Time Fave Dance Songs and this is one that had me singing along and dancing in my driver's seat. This one's from all the way back in 2001 and if you don't know it, you should definitely check out this most singalong jam...
Good morning and Happy Hump Day! Here's a summer jam that always gets me going. It's one of the most inventive and awesome uses of a sample that I know, with Etta James' powerful pipes mixed in with Avicii's musical mix and Flo Rida's energetic raps to create a wonderful concoction. Great tune! Enjoy...
Here's an old favorite from 1998. The tune cleverly uses the familiar music from the Jacksons' classic Can You Feel It and the nonsensical words sung by sultry-voiced Maya are oh so fun!
Well there's very little to be learned about today's summer jam. Other than the lyrics and the video, there seems to be relatively nothing on Tim Deluxe, Sam Obernik or the song itself. All I know is that it appeared on a club mix CD that I bought somewhere in the 2000's and I love it. From the fast-paced rumba track to the nasally-voiced vocals, this one's both unique and fun. Check out It Just Won't Do...
Good morning and Happy Sunday to all. We're back to our summer jams with a song who's very theme is summer. Check out Calvin Harris' summer and have a wonderful day!
Back in the year 2001, Jamaican reggae artist Shaggy was smoking hot with his album Hot Shot, which produced the monster hits It Wasn't Me, Luv Me, Luv Me and this one, a #1 feel-good tune that's as sweet as it is catchy. Happy Friday y'all...enjoy!
Oh man, I hope you're reliving these memories as fondly as I am. A couple of weeks ago, when I was doing 90's summer jams, I couldn't help but marvel at all of the great music that came out of that decade and here we are, four days into celebrating reggae jams and all of the ones I've shared have come out of the 90's, too. Here's a classic from Jamaican duo Chaka Demus and Pliers, with a fast-paced down-home fun reggae jam that ya just can't help but move to. Check out Murder, She Wrote...
Some of you may remember Gwen Stefani's version of this classic reggae jam. To many, nothing's ever as good as the original, and that is so the case with this one. The tune, by Brit one hit wonders Louchie Lou and Michie One, takes the melody from Fiddler On the Roof's If I Were a Rich Man and gives it both a modern, feminine twist as well as some hypnotic reggae beats. This one always got them going on the dance floor back in the day when I was a deejay. By the way, what the heck is a ragamuffin anyway????
