New Music Fridays, June 29th, 2018 - A Nice Variety of New Music

This has been an oddly good week in new music, though at first listen, I wasn't crazy about any of the tunes spotlighted here.  The ones I chose are varied in genre, but all pretty damned good, so check out this week's offerings...

Don't Matter to Me - Drake, Michael Jackson

Undoubtedly the biggest new music story of the week was the dropping of Drake's brand new double album, Scorpion.  Not a huge Drake fan here, but there are definitely some tunes in his catalog that I do love, and they all tend to be more on the R&B side, like this whopper of a surprise.  Apparently, the Canadian rapper/singer delved into some of Michael Jackson's later work and used the King of Pop's vocals withing the overall construction of this song.  Pitchfork has an incredibly amazing piece on this.  Check out a sound-clip of Don't Matter to Me...

Lovers - LoKii, REMMI

Here's a sweet, catchy tune by dance artists LoKii and REMMI.  Check out Lovers...

Bad Love - Sean Paul, Ellie Goulding

It's been a long time since we've heard anything from Ellie Goulding, but now she's back with a funky new reggae-tinged dance track featuring none other than Sean Paul.  Check out Bad Love...

Everybody Needs a Kiss - Benny Benassi, Sofi Tukker

Here's a brand new collaboration between Italian producer Benny Benassi and the hot hot Sofi Tukker.  This one, like virtually anything ST touches, is golden.  Check out Everybody Needs a Kiss...

Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You - Sheryl Crow, Annie Clark

Wow!  I haven't paid virtually any attention to Sheryl Crow in years, but this new collaboration with fellow female guitarist extraordinaire Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, is wicked good!  The song is a political rant against climate change deniers and you've just got to hear it.  Here's Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You...

I think I'm going to skip any honorable mentions this week.  Nothing really particularly stands out to not here, but you can always check out the New Music Fridays playlist on Spotify.

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Chain Reaction - Diana Ross

Image result for chain reaction diana ross

We conclude our week long tribute to Diana Ross with a tune I was hoping she was going to sing the other night, but didn't.  Back in 1985, Diana released her last great album, Eaten Alive.  The majority of the tracks on the album were produced by legendary disco group, the Bee Gees, with the exception of the title track, which was penned by Michael Jackson.  Though this song was the only big hit to come off the record, many of the tracks here are amongst my favorite Diana songs ever.  So click play below to relive a fond memory and then go out and have an awesome Friday...

Song of the Day - Scream - Michael and Janet Jackson

Tired of injustice
Tired of the schemes
The lies are disgusting
So what does it mean
Kicking me down
I got to get up
As jacked as it sounds
The whole system sucks

Peek in the shadow
Come into the light
You tell me I'm wrong
Then you better prove you're right
You're sellin' out souls but
I care about mine
I've got to get stronger
And I won't give up the fight

With such confusions don't it make you wanna scream
Your bash abusin' victimize within the scheme
You try to cope with every lie they scrutinize
Somebody please have mercy
'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream

My theme song for the day...classic and oh so true!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Centipede - Rebbie Jackson

Today's Flashback Friday is a tune I had long forgotten about, and then one day last week for whatever reason it popped back into my memory.  Wikipedia says it is the eldest Jackson sibling's highest charting single ever, though I don't know of any other song that she ever made. Centipede came out in 1984 and hit #24 on the pop charts.  It was written and produced by Rebbie's lil brother Michael, and features he, sister LaToya and The Weather Girls on backing vocals, a fact that I never knew.  Anyway, if you were around in 84, then you should certainly remember this one...
