Song of the Day - Wake Me Up - Avicii, featuring Aloe Blacc

Wake Me Up (Avicii song) - Wikipedia

It's Easter Sunday, the first one I've spent not in Europe in several years.  In a normal world, I would be in Madrid today, but instead I am home, alone, with no one but myself to keep me company.  I can't even spend the day with my family...sigh!  I'm so tired of this.  Please, just wake me up wen it's all over...

I caught a list of the top dance songs of the decade from Billboard Magazine the other day and when I saw this one I just knew I should post it.  Great song!  Here's Wake Me Up...

Song of the Day - The Days - Avicii, Robbie Williams

Under the tree where the grass don't grow
We made a promise to never get old
You had a chance and you took it on me
And I made a promise that I couldn't keep

This past Sunday would have been Avicii's 30 birthday.  Though we're a couple of days late, I couldn't let the day pass without a mention.  His surprising and untimely death is still such a big loss for the dance music world and the whole music world in general.  Here's one of my favorite songs of his, a collaboration with Robbie Williams on a tender ballad turned dance tune.  Check out The Days...

Song of the Day - Tough Love - Avicii, feat. Agnes, Vargas & Lagola

Image result for tough love

I'm never really sure how I feel about posthumous records.  On one hand, I can't help but think of the term greed, but on the other, I understand wanting to hear something that was begun and sadly never finished...a story for another time perhaps.  That being said, a posthumous album by late deejay/producer extraordinaire Avicii was just released on Friday.  The record is called TIM, after the star's real name, Tim Bergling.  This, the second single off that album is an  Avicii creation, no doubt, with a dramatic score set to equally beautiful vocals that are catchy.  Check out Tough Love...

Song of the Day - Wash Over Me - Madonna, Avicii

Image result for wash over me madonna avicii

In a world that's changing
I'm a stranger in a strange land
There's a contradiction
And I'm stuck here in between

Life is like a desert
An a oasis to confuse me
So I walk this razors edge
Will I stand or will I fall?

Turn a blind eye, try to pretend that nothing is what it seems
Torn between the impulse to stay or running away from all this madness

Who am I
To decide what should be done
If this is the end then let it come
Let it come
Let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it flow
Let it wash all over me
Over me

About three years ago, Avicii worked with Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin on this sweet, but little-known track.  Check out Heaven...

Song of the Day - Levels - Avicii

Image result for levels avicii

Here's Avicii's very first huge hit, a song that was inspired by Etta James' Something's Got a Hold On Me and then went on to inspire Flo Rida's anthemic Good Feeling.  It was the one song I knew of his when he opened up for Madonna at her Yankee Stadium MDNA Tour and it was awesome!  Check out Levels...

Song of the Day - Wash Over Me (Avicii Mix) - Madonna

Image result for wash all over me avicii

One of my favorite songs ever is Madonna's Wash Over Me, but not the version from the Rebel Heart album, the Avicii remix which was tragically never released.  Our honoree of the week, the late Avicii, took a drab, but beautifully written song and turned it into an inspirational dance masterpiece.  I don't know how long this will stay up here because many previous incarnations of the mysteriously guarded tune have disappeared, so take a listen while you can...

Song of the Day - The Days - Avicii, feat. Robbie Wiliams

Under the tree where the grass don't grow

And I made a promise that I couldn't keep

Back in 2014, Avicii released a two-track EP called The Days/The Nights, and this first of two songs is one of my favorite Avicii tunes ever.  It features British singer Robbie Williams on vocals and the arrangement is splendid, with acoustic guitars and a melancholic synth rhythm to accompany the verses and a crescendo at the chorus.  Great song!  Check out The Days...

Song of the Day - Wake Me Up - Avicii, feat. Aloe Blacc

Image result for avicii

I first heard the news on Madonna's Instagram feed of all places.  Beneath a picture of the singer, who I didn't recognize at first, and Madonna read the caption,

So sad...so tragic.  Goodbye Dear Sweet Tim. Gone too soon. #avicii

Like any other fan of popular and dance music, I was stunned.  I immediately headed to Twitter to verify the news and sure enough, Tim Bergling, otherwise known as superstar deejay and producer, Avicii, had been found dead in Oman.  He was only 28 years old.

Anyone who follows this blog on a regular basis knows that I am a big fan of Avicii and his music.  I've posted him at least a dozen times or so and have spent countless hours listening to his music, especially his breakthrough debut album, True.  He put his own great spins on tunes for Madonna, Coldplay, Flo Rida, and many many more and he will surely be missed in the dance music world.

Avicii was such an important force in music that I don't think that one day's tribute is enough.  Thus I hereby declare the coming week in his honor.  First up is his first, and one of his biggest, hits.  It's a dance song with country inspired sounds and a wonderful set of lyrics masterfully sung by the soulful and melancholic voice of singer Aloe Blacc.  Here's Wake Me Up...

Song of the Day - Lonely Together - Avicii, feat. Rita Ora

Image result for lonely together avicii

After a long absence from the music scene, it looks like Swedish deejay/producer is back on track with some brand new music.  This one I featured on New Music Fridays back in early August and now, with a few weeks of sitting in my folder of current music, it's been growing on me more and more, especially with singer Rita Ora's powerful pipes guiding the song along.  Check out Lonely Together...

New Music Fridays: August 11th, 2017 - The Week's Hottest New Tracks

Hello and welcome back to John's Music World New Music Fridays.  It was another slow week last week in new music (I only tagged 7 songs...a new low!), but what did come out is exciting, including the new album by Kesha, some new Avicii, and of course a highly anticipated release from P!nk. Check out my picks for this week's hottest new tracks:

What About Us - P!nk

Friday (actually Thursday) saw a highly anticipated debut track from P!nk's long awaited new album, beautiful Trauma. The song is vintage P!nk, beautifully written and performed.  I posted it as Song of the Day earlier, so check it out here.

Lonely Together - Avicii, featuring Rita Ora

Superstar deejay/producer Avicii released two new tracks this week, the up tempo Without You, featuring Sandro Cavazza, and this nice, sweet track featuring a new favorite singer, Rita Ora.  Check it out...

Little of Your Love - HAIM, BloodPop

HAIM is a trio of sisters with sweet voices whose music I either love or hate.  This new remix of their song Little of Your Love by BloodPop is da bomb.  Check it out...

Let 'Em Talk - Kesha

I am loving this new Kesha!  Her latest outstanding track, from her newly released Rainbow album is three minutes of fast-moving fun, plain and simple.  Check it out...

Well, I told you it was a slow week, but an exciting one nonetheless.  I hope you find something here to whet your appetite for new music.  Stay tuned for more...

Song of the Day - The Days - Avicii, feat. Robbie Williams

I almost forgot about superstar Swedish deejay/producer Avicii until I was looking for something different to listen to yesterday and I came across his playlist.  It's been a long time since we've heard anything significant from him, so here's a gem from his 2014 The Days/Nights EP featuring British crooner Robbie Williams.  Great tune!

Flashback Friday Song of the Day - Wake Me Up - Avicii, feat. Aloe Blacc

Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself and I
Didn't know I was lost

In a less than ordinary week I've been struggling to find a way to soldier on with life. On Wednesday I decided to go without music for a day and therefore there was no Song of the Day post.  I didn't even listen to music during my long ride to work, not wanting it to interfere with my thought-process in trying to make sense of all that's happened this week.  Tuesday's election is still a very bitter pill to swallow and whatever divisions existed before the event seem to have intensified in the days since.  It's really such a sad place to be!

I've got a million, yet nothing to say about it, for now, but I think I speak for many of my fellow Americans when I say that some of the lyrics to this song, especially the chorus, kind of sum up how we've been feeling as we grapple our way towards both acceptance and resolve.  So for what it's worth, check out Avicii with Aloe Blacc and their tune Wake Me Up...

Song of the Day - Taste the Feeling - Avicii vs. Conrad Sewell

If the video and song for this new collaboration between Swedish superstar deejay/producer Avicii and Australian crooner Conrad Sewell looks and sounds like a commercial for Coca Cola, well...it is! Just about two months ago, the soft drink conglomerate named the tune its official anthem for its UEFA EURO 2016 campaign.  All commercialism aside, the tune is three-minutes of feelgood pop at its best, with Sewell's soothing vocals set to a little Avicii magic.  You might know the Aussie singer from his work on Kygo's Firestone, and after a listen or two to this one, you'll definitely want to hear more from this shining newcomer.  Check out Taste the Feeling...

Song of the Day - For a Better Day - Avicii

It seems like Avicii has been putting music out slowly and steadily and in dribs and drabs in the months since his monumental True album, but now he's got a brand new set of thirteen tunes that pick up where the last one left off.  Here is the second single off of his current Stories album and it just happens to be my favorite, with piano riffs, crescendos and nice vocals by singer Alex Ebert.  Check it out...

Rolling Stone Names Madonna One of the Top 100 Songwriters of All Time

Traveling down, this road
Watching the signs as I go
I think I'll follow, the sun
Isn't everyone just

Traveling down, their own road
Watching the signs as they go
I think I'll follow, my heart
It's a very good place to start

Madonna didn't become the iconic superstar she is by chance.  No, there are plenty of reasons why she stands where she does today.  Of course, she's been a notorious provocateur over the years, which is unfortunately what many people think of when they think of Madonna, but that's just a small part of who she is and has been.  That's the part that yes, perhaps got her a lot more attention than she might have gotten otherwise, but without talent she'd be nowhere today.

Music, makes the people, come together...

Just recently Rolling Stone Magazine published its list for the best songwriters of all time, and Madonna has landed at #56.  Now, what I've already known for years and years is finally official!

From those earliest days in New York, when she broke out with Everybody in the early eighties, Madonna's music had that extra something that made people pay attention, whether it was the dancey music track, the lyrics, the persona, or all of them put together in one package.  I remember a family road trip to New Jersey once where I'd forced my dad to play Madonna's first album from start to finish in the van, telling everyone that she was going to be big, and although people naturally don't like to hear music they don't know in such a situation, they all enjoyed it.

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

Lyrics are oftentimes the most important ingredient in a song, and throughout the years, Madonna has had so much success in large part due to her lyrics.  They've reflected her own life at the time and almost always struck major chords with her fans, including me.  I won't say that I know every Madonna lyric she ever wrote, but there's definitely a huge file in my brain somewhere that contains her many, many lyrics.

When the world starts to get you down
And nothing seems to go your way
And the noise of the maddening crowd
Makes you feel like you're going to go insane

And for those out there (and I know there are plenty of you!) who say that "Oh, I don't like her new stuff. It's just not as good," take a look at these lyrics. They're from a song off of Rebel Heart called Wash All Over Me, and I posted these words on Facebook a couple of weeks ago, without commentary or reference to Madonna...
In a world that's changing
I'm a stranger, in a strange land
There's a contradiction
And I'm stuck here in between

Life is like a desert,
An oasis, to confuse me
So I walk this razor's edge
Will I stand or will I fall

Through a blind eye
I try to pretend that
Nothing is what it seems
Torn between the impulse to stay
Or running away from all this madness

Who am I
To decide what should be done
If this is, the end, then let it come

Let it come, let it rain
Rain all over me
Like the tide, let it roll
Let it wash all over me
Over me...let it wash all over me

Some of my friends actually thought I wrote it. "Amazing!," one of them said. Yup, that's Madge! Now check out the tune...

Summer Jams Song of the Day - Good Feeling - Flo Rida

Good morning and Happy Hump Day!  Here's a summer jam that always gets me going.  It's one of the most inventive and awesome uses of a sample that I know, with Etta James' powerful pipes mixed in with Avicii's musical mix and Flo Rida's energetic raps to create a wonderful concoction.  Great tune!  Enjoy...

Summer Jams Song of the day - You Make Me - Avicii

It's simple,  It's got simple lyrics, a steady beat, and some really big Oh oh oh oh's.  Ooh, I just loved Avicii's True album...so many good ones there to choose from, but going with the theme of summer jams, I think this one fits the bill just great.  Now if we could only get some steady sunshine and warm temps to go with all the hot music...
